I've seen quite a few good movies lately and I've enjoyed them but, I don't really have a lot of thinky thoughts as to why I liked them, for the most part.

For example, Captain America, the First Avenger was brilliant and poignant and lovely. Plus, lots of exploding things and muscles and an evil character and bombs and stunts and a kickass chick in it and Tommy Lee Jones. But I don't have deep thoughts over it. I just really liked it. 10 out of 10

For the Bible Tells Me So is a documentary about the Bible and what it has to say about homosexuality. It takes a look at literalists versus those that interpret the Bible. It features families that are very religious and how they cope with having a homosexual child in their midst. It's got commentary from Archbishop Desmond Tutu in addition to Dick Gephardt and others. I really felt for Tonia Poteat, especially. Her family has this weird dichotomy of the "hate the sin, love the sinner". Her father is a self-important asshole, IMHO. It made me think about my own spiritual path and my own views of the Bible and religion. 10 out of 10

Hunger with Michael Fassbender was very good if quite disturbing and deep. I was expecting to think about it afterwards and I definitely got that. It's worth watching. 10 out of 10

Centurion with Michael Fassbender was fairly awesome. Etain was kickass awesome. I didn't expect much out of it as I hadn't read any reviews and I hadn't really cared about the story. I originally started watching for Michael Fassbender so it surprised me that the story captured my attention as much as it did. 10 out of 10

The Ninth Legion was another that I hadn't expected much out of but, since I'd just watched one 9th Legion movie, I thought I'd watch another. It was fairly slashy, had some interesting moments and was fairly decent. I went in with low expectations, mainly because it had Channing Tatum. He's pretty but I don't expect him to act. He did a decent job of it. It's not a movie that will change the world with its plot, acting and script but it was a fun movie to watch. 10 out of 10

Tangled was also fun. I've been watching a lot of movies that are mainly brain candy and this filled that need. I really enjoyed the movie but I don't really have any other thoughts than "bwee, fun" for it. 10 out of 10

Guys.

Guys. Seriously. Guys.

X-Men First Class.

Best X-Men Movie Ever Y/MFY?!

I am so aflail with glee and amazement and fic ideas and love and babble and this movie. THE WORLD cannot contain my squee and giddiness over this movie.

This movie. IDEK

I am so totally and completely in love with it. I must go see it again and again and again. I would've seen it twice today if it hadn't been for a baby shower I had to get to. I am going to see Thor and then X-Men First Class on Tuesday. I cannot fucking wait.

wook77: (books)
I'm almost completely done with my resolution of 50 books and 50 movies (I'm short 5 movies for the year but am over 100 books already this year :D) but those new books and movies aren't what I thought I'd post about.

One of my favorite movies is Sleepers. It's set in Hell's Kitchen in the 60s/70s, centering around with 4 boys who make one small mistake and get eaten alive by the system and then take revenge on the people that raped them as children. It's all about the choices we make and those that are made for us, how they affect us and what we do with them.

It's got a brilliant cast in it. Cast list includes Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Robert De Nero, Minnie Driver, Brad Renfro, Dustin Hoffman, Billy Crudup, and, as all things head back to - Kevin Bacon.

It's perfectly paced with brilliant transitions and a fantastic voice over/narration.

It's tightly plotted. There are no wasted scenes, every scene has a purpose and adds to the story rather than distracting from it.

It deals with a horrible, awful scenario and doesn't shy away from the horrors of juvie, prisons and child rape.

It's very close to the book. Surprisingly close to the book with the way that movies normally rape the text and make a mockery of the books.

It is, in short, one of the best movies that I've ever seen.

I have week in the life photos. Just haven't uploaded them. Instead, I've been working assloads of hours. Which means money for vacations so I'm not complaining.

Today, though... I went to bed about midnight last night, woke up about 11 this morning and was fast asleep by 230. Then I woke back up about 5 and got a shower. In the time I was awake, I watched:

Hooligans/Green Street Hooligans. Charlie Hunnam is hot and other important parts of a review )

Tonight at Fry's, I wrote over a thousand words of a fanfic set in the Green Street Hooligans universe. The movie hit but IDK why it hit hard enough to cause ficcage.

Spent the Fourth working. Had a chance to dressdown but forgot. I blame chatting with [livejournal.com profile] best_of_five.

Am testdriving the Mazda 3 and the Mazda 6 tomorrow/later today.

Am getting ready to head to the garage to have my hood release looked at. I've my fingers crossed that it's just because of gunk build-up that the latch won't open. Don't burst my bubble until the garage does, yeah? I'm hopeful they can get it opened and do the oil change I need and switch out my turn signal fuse, too.

I've had pretty bad insomnia this past weekend and into last night. I've gotten about 6 hours of sleep in dribs and drabs since Friday. Just little catnaps. Stupid stress.

However, that only means that I've watched a metric asstonne of movies. After cruising the flist, someone rec'd Shelter and then linked to someone who had the download. Of course Firefox crashed before I could thank the person so I've no idea who I ganked it from BUT - omgsogood. It's a very lovely story that has a nice pace to it. spoilery thoughts and rambling review )

10 out of 10

I uploaded it to share the love. Definitely go out and buy it though as there are some really brilliant cast commentaries and special features on teh DVD that aren't on the download. here is the download. It's a zip so you'll have to unzip it and it's rather HUGE (almost a gig by itself). I also converted it to the iPod so I can watch it on that when I get bored at Fry's.

I made the mistake of watching The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Run, do not walk, away from this movie )

2 out of 10 and it only gets that because the camera peeps deserve a spot of love.

Random observation - there are certain words that should never be used in a sex scene. I read one fic this morning that utilized the word "girth" as a name for a cock. ie - "He sucked the girth into his mouth and sucked". Um, bwa? When I think of girth, I think of my fat ass and how girthy it is. I don't think of a giant cock of doom. In conclusion, girth is not a sexxehtiems word. Stop using it. Plz.

Went to go see Spiderwick Chronicles with [livejournal.com profile] shygryf and, well, I am a horrible friend. I totes told her 615. When did I show up? just past 630. So I was late. Like I always am anytime I go to meet her. I'm made of fail. But - the good thing was that she pulled in to the restaurant parking lot right after me. So win!

We had a blast talking fandom, fandom politics *shudders at the phrase*, different past and future wankstorms and a variety of other happenings including the trials of her job and the trials of my jobs and... and the poor waitress didn't really know what to do with us, methinks. BUT - it was totes fun.

Open house didn't go so well. Turns out that another realtor used my realtor's signs to point to their own open house. Made of fail, people, made of fail. However, our realtor is going to not only take it up with that realtor, she's going to have an open house on Saturday next. So hopefully that one goes better.

I'm about three days behind in responding to things. Speaking of being made of fail... when one is behind in responding, one shouldn't keep posting :/.

That concludes the most recent spate of movies and books. I'm shocked that I have my first two 10s in this post but there you have it.

In other news - I made my mother and sister watch Boondock Saints and they were suitably impressed. My brother and his family were here for the day and we were all talking about the movie and he wanted to borrow it and I grabbed it to my bosum and snarled "mine". I need that for fantasising research, garshdarnit!

I've another three Norman Reedus movies rented and I'm going to be renting a few Sean Patrick Flanery movies as well. I'm also screencapping like a fool and will be uploading them tomorrow while struggling through payroll.

I finally found what the people I'm dogsitting at considered my payment. The dogs had started to eat it and it was bundled up in their bedding. We agreed to $60 a night, they paid me $28 a night. Called my friend and then their cousin, who I know. The cousin is going to speak to them about this.

As it is, what they deemed fair paid for a tank of gas, my allergy meds (I'm allergic to cats and they have 6) and food to eat out because they have no microwave and everything is all natural and in bits so it takes forever to cook. I'm not coming home from work and then trying to figure out what I can make from all the unlabeled jars and canisters. (an example from last night... is that salt or sugar? *sprinkles some on a plate* Oh, it's sugar! Good thing I didn't put that on my potato.)

The thing I don't get is that these people own a fairly successful "landmark" restaurant in downtown Tucson, so it's not like they don't have the money. Oh well, so I cut out all the perks and the animals are getting basic care, instead.

I watched Boondock Saints last night.
