Rather than fixating on how stressed and annoyed I am, how about a celebratory post?

DADT has been repealed! WOOHOO! About damned time! Plus, Someone I know just got married. I love that they timed it so that as the repeal went into effect, they were getting married. Couldn't happen to nicer people, as far as I'm concerned. I'm only sad cause I think this means that the person I know is moving to Sierra Vista and I won't see him as much any longer.

Same Sex Couples will be available in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Considering how much I love Star Wars and I love Bioware, this is great news as far as I'm concerned. I'm disappointed that it'll be add-on content but if that add-on content is free, well, that'll be awesome. I'm curious how it'll work if I have the add-on content and someone else doesn't - will they see my same-sex partner and/or acknowledge that relationship? Or can people still have the gay blinders on and not see any same sex relationship? Inquiring minds want to know.

I pre-ordered Assassin's Creed: Revelations, finally. I also pre-ordered Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. I hated the other Elder Scrolls game I played but, I'm voting with my wallet and supporting games that have equality in them.

I was following the #yesGayYA hashtag and reading all the various and sundry. So I bought about 20 books from a list that was put on [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's post. Lee Wind has a ton of great books listed. I've already made arrangements with the library system here that, when I'm done, they'll be very happy to take the books off my hands and put them into circulation. Can't ask for more than that from the librarians since they're not allowed to buy any new books right now because of budget cuts. They can, however, use donated books. So I'll have to be gentle with them.

Which leads me to my question for all of you - what are your favorite "traditional published" books featuring gay characters? Can be young adult, fantasy, romance, sci-fi, whatever. Just not an e-publisher since I read so many of those already. I ask for any of them because, for as much as I want to see more LGBTQ characters in young adult, I want to see them in regular fiction, too. And in fantasy. And in romances on the shelf, under the "romance" filing rather than the "LGBT" section. So to help with that, I'll continue voting with my wallet and showing publishers that I will buy LGBT books. Lay your recs on me, oh great and wonderful Flist!

My racism/minority groups class is depressing me and not due to subject matter, either. I really thought that in a class that has an entire segment of the textbook that addresses the fallacy of "some of my best friends are..." that I wouldn't receive a comment that stated that "over-the-top portrayals of gays is all right because one of my best friends is gay and he laughs at himself all the time". Um, dude, just cause you find campy stereotypes of gay people to be lolarious doesn't mean that everyone does. I shouldn't have to explain the segment of the motherfucking textbook to you. I also shouldn't have to explain that his vote doesn't cancel out my vote and that makes it all right that the only portrayals of gays on mainstream television are the campy ones that never have a relationship.

Ugh, I did it anyway but, still. So much depressing bits because I shouldn't have to do it in a class based on racism and minority groups.

Then again, this entire weekend has been filled with this. I had to defriend someone yesterday (and block them from my LJ) when they decided to post a vitriolic, Islamaphobic diatribe as an "honor to 9/11". It is not honoring the people that died on 9/11 to post nasty, hate-filled, accusatory and negative stereotypes in an attack on Muslims. Cause, guess what? There were some *gasp* Muslims that died on 9/11 that weren't the hijackers, so STFU, bigoted doucherocket. Stop using a tragedy to justify your hatred. Otherwise, don't be surprised when someone whips out the Oklahoma City Bombing as a reason to hate all Christians. Face it, there are extremists of every religion out there. I shouldn't have to explain this but, dude, guess I do.

I also spent the weekend working and shopping for books. I got a bunch of awesome old skool romance novels to laugh at read and enjoy in addition to some awesome cookbooks, fantastic movies and Wiilliam Shatner's Star Trek Memories. OMG DID I SCORE OR WHAT!? The Shatman's memories of being on the Star Trek set! EEEEEEE PLUS OMG! I got a cd of his music and three books that he authored! It was Shatmanapalooza!

How was your weekend?

If you could pick one book, no matter how fluff or trash or random or scientific or educational or romantic or schmoopy - what would that book be and why?

It can be part of a series. It can be a book that's out of print. It can be a book with a movie based on it. It can be a child's book. It can be a book about serial killers. It can be raunchy poetry. It can be about string theory. It can be het. It can be gen. It can be slash.

It just has to be a real favorite book. Don't post what you think everyone else wants to read or what you think will impress other people. Post what the one book that you love and adore more than any other is. If it's a Nora Roberts book or a biography on Kennedy, I don't care.

What's the one book that you would rec to the heavens and beyond?

(It can even be more than one book)
wook77: (shut it)
You all remember the last Ravenous Romance review by Dear Author? Remember the swinging schlong in the bathroom and the random medieval time-traveling codpiece of doom? Remember the ladyfingers?

Now, there's a m/m book including burping cocks, cocks that unroll like paper towels and more. Even I cannot bring myself to read the actual book though the review had tears streaming down my face. (and omg, there are screencaps to prove the insanity)

Also - there's another review that contains a certain region of a female body as an "afro". wow, yeah, that just happened.

Remind me to never, ever, buy anything from this publisher ever. Also - remind me to not even contemplate submitting to them for publishing. HOMG BAD.

Now off to bed.

Got right back into the swing of working assloads of hours as soon as [livejournal.com profile] anathema91 left me :(.

Tonight, though, I scored a few really awesome things at Fry's. See, last weekend's "sidewalk sale" was on books. And dude. I got book 2 of the Bartameaus (omg, cannot spell that) Trilogy, The Opal Deception (Artemis Fowl) and about 10 romance novels with assorted other books that are gifts and, thus, cannot be disclosed at this time... all for 30 bucks. 15 books for 30 bucks. That rules.

Speaking of stuff that rules -

Thanks to whomever voted for me. This made me absolutely ecstatic.

Speaking of stuff that doesn't rule - me. I'm getting my ass handed to me in Lego Star Wars 2. Dude. It's legos. Why am I losing so hardcore?! Stupid princess needing stupid rescuing.

Going back to things that rule. this article about the reshoots for Wolverine rules if just for that awesome flailworthy photo attached. You and I both know that Gambit AND Sabretooth are totes checking out Wolverine's ass. Unfortunately for Sabretooth, he's already lost out to Gambit. It's just too bad for him and awesome for us. "I know who you are, Gambit." *flails*

If someone were to icon that, I think I would explode in a gleeful explosion.

Going to see Underworld 3 tomorrow. My sister and I are going to hang out. We haven't done that in months with just the two of us so it should be nice. Then after that - I get to go into the main job to do some end of year tax stuffs. And to clean up some of the mess left after the people in charge at the main job terminated both of the main managers. Nice planning on their part, too, because they didn't think to make arrangements on how to cover duties until after they terminated the two people. I got a phone call asking me to come up with a plan. WTF, people, WTF?!

And I slip right back into not ruling stuffs but to head back into ruling stuffs one last time - There was a George/Lee fic that ruled. It was written awhile back that featured George going off to, err, southeast Asia or somewhere around there and Charlie tracking him down. Do you guys know what this story is? I've been thinking on it all day and I cannot remember the title or the author and I really want to re-read it. Help?

A Few Recs

I've been promising links to a few of my favourite GLBT books.

The first is Kirith Kirin. I reviewed it before and it maintains a very high spot on my favourite book list. A small caveat - I would not read the continuation of the series. It devolves into a weird world that I didn't enjoy.

Lynn Flewelling. No, srsly. She has two series - Nightrunner series feature a gay couple as the two main heroes. Every book (but the last one which I hated) is well written. I have high hopes for the next book as the author took the concrit and worked on the issues and promised to improve the issues. So give this series a try.

The second series is Tamir Trilogy features a transgendered heroine. It's a fantastic concept and it's fairly well executed. I quite like this series.

So there are some of my favourite books. Do you have any recommendations?

Finally, a few more fandom things - I've been promising a link to this story - Why Sex Ed Should Stay in Schools - it's a Sesame Street slash story and omg. The lulz. I talked about this at Terminus a lot. I've talked about this story in chats and on vacation and just go read it. It's seriously amazingly crackalicious.

Verbotene Liebe playlist. Srsly awesome in a semi-poorly-acted German and subtitled sort of way.
wook77: (wtf - politics)
I have had a really bad headache all day. I think it's 95% caused by "someone is wrong on the internets" syndrome, 4% caused by the weather and 1% caused by genetics.

[livejournal.com profile] rs_games is posting Round II. Why not pop over and give it a try? It's going a lot more smoothly than before. There have been some rather awesome stories. Especially by Team Experience Wins Every Time versus Team Why Is My Willie Hard And What Is It Really Supposed To Do?.

I have thinky thoughts on what being a mod is all about but I'll leave it for another day.

I spent the evening off either sleeping or reading the trashiest novels ever. The current one isn't even well written. SNARK AHOY!

In fact, Review of Soul Song by Marjorie Liu. To sum up - merman rentboy and that's the best part )

Final Verdict? 3 out of 10 if just for the crack factor.

The other one, I spent good money on, all of three dollars and thirty eight cents. The Nymph King by Gena Showalter )

Final Verdict: A surprising 5 out of 10. At least it didn't have a bunch of typos.

Finally, the last book I've read in the past day and a half - A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole )

Final Verdict: 6 out of 10.

May I just say that I am completely overwhelmed (in happiness) to the point of tears that there are so many applications to [livejournal.com profile] hd_worldcup already and the post has only been up 14 hours? I'm seriously just watching the apps come in and going o.O. I really didn't expect that sort of turnout.

Medications are working and I'm a lot less pouty and whiny. Bit of advice, though - when the medication instructions say "use three times daily" - do NOT interpret it as "use every three hours". I might've done that with my cough suppressant. I am an idiot.

Moving right along - [livejournal.com profile] fandom_reads - for that book club that I mentioned earlier. Book Suggestions are being welcomed right now and we're looking to start soon! YAYES for this! So much fun! I've never been part of a book club before. I'm in love with [livejournal.com profile] yodels for spearheading this and getting it all organized.

[livejournal.com profile] slashfest Round VI will be accepting requests this weekend and claiming will happen next weekend. You don't have to claim to request and you don't have to request to claim. There are 406 outstanding requests from previous rounds so there's already plenty to choose from if you're only looking to claim. Plz to be expecting me to hit you up for things I think you might sekritly want to write that you didn't know you wanted to but now that I've pointed them out you're totally going to write them stuffs. BUT - with the change in canon in a variety of fandoms, I cannot wait to see what sort of new things people will request. I'm so excited for this!!!

I wrote a couple of things for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide that I will be posting in the next few days. I have my daily_deviant fic for January sitting open as if it were asking - "is it January 3rd yet?". Probably none of you will read it (cause it's that squicky het stuffs...) but I'm sort of in love with it.

Off to nap. I'll catch up on comments when I wake. Promise.
wook77: (Overwhelmed)
As much of my flist knows, I'm moving in Feb/March timeframe to a brand-spanking new house (as in, they just broke ground on building my house this past week).

I'm a book h0r. I hoard books. I sometimes pick them up and pet them as I love my books that much. When I moved to Arizona three years ago, I had 40 boxes of books and I've not gotten rid of more than 2 or 3 books since then but have bought many many more.

Today, then, is a momentous day for me. I'm purging books because I don't want to move them to the new house. I figured out that it costs me 27 dollars a box to move them (calculating the average weight of a box of books vs the rate per pound).

On books and existential angst about books... )
To make this less about me and my angst... do you all have a favourite book that you just can't bear to part with? Cheesy romance novel, sci-fi, fantasy, murder mystery, book read to you as a child, any of them. Is there a story behind why?

and please, I know we all can't bear to part with the HP books
