Dear Flist -

I had 4k written of my serpentinelion fic today.

When I went to save it tonight? Word crashed and now? The document opens up with boxes instead of text and then proceeds to crash word. It won't allow me to open it with wordpad and when I sent it to someone else, it crashed their word as well.

Please, I know alot of you guys are amazing computer people... please tell me there is some way of recovering this document. Please. I'm seriously borderline tears right now. It took me all day to write that 4k. I only had three more scenes to write and then I was done.

Send it to me to see if there's anything about it? You didn't get a message saying that Word had stored a copy automatically, did you?

Have you ever used Open Office? It's a free download, and although I have no idea about its recovery powers, it might be worth a shot. Or, if you don't want to download it it, if you want to e-mail it to me and I can try opening it with Open Office, I'd be more than happy to give it a shot. *squeeze*

i have open office and tried a few things with wook's doc last night and managed to recover a few sentences, but the rest was still symbols.

Oh my god. Did word try to recover it? I don't know, what year of Word do you have? I have 2003 and it AutoRecovers everything I write and if word crashes it has an option open asking if I want to open that and save it...Oh wow I really wish I could help you but I am completely at a loss, Wook. :(

if you still need help I can try. though files chewed thoroughly by Word like that tend to be just a heap of nulls inside, which is a real chance when you only see the same boxes repeating through the doc and no other funny characters.

This is such a common problem with word that there are a bunch of Word Recovery Programs out there.
I haven't used one in years, so I can't vouch for their effectiveness...
But these are ones that have demo downloads that might work for you:

And the list goes on and on...if you want more choices... This Google Search Came up with a bunch of possible programs.
