Question for the flist -

When you stab someone between the shoulderblades and leave the knife in... is there a lot of blood that leaks out?

This is for a story, not for real life so please don't think I'm pyschopathic.

I would think so. I mean, the blood would keep coming unless you plugged it up and a knife isn't exactly good plugging-up material, I think. In movies, the blood always flows around the knife, doesn't it? Right? I think?

Whatever. If you're planning on killing somebody, would I count as an accomplice because of what I just told you?

I'm thinking like you're thinking.

But, there's some good info below as well ;)

And no, I'm not planning on killing someone. This is really for a story.

I think it also depends on what the knife hits. Other than that... *brainfarts*

I want it to be between teh shoulderblades... so I'm thinking it should hit the heart or at least a lung.

Iknow nothing about stabbing people...why this idea popped in to my head, I have no idea

Well... there must be a reason why in old detective movies people always say to keep the knife in until the ambulance arrives...

It depends on the knife. Some knives have a narrow slot in them running up the base of the blade called a "blood trough" to facilitate movement of the blood past the knife. Generally, though, the tissue siezes around the blade and the blood stays in.

Chalk it up to years of D&D...

Ok, so it's possible for the blood to at least drip out, right? From around the blade?

Yes, especially if you twist the knife a little bit.

I do not think that there would be much blood at all. No large vessels back there (says the old human anatomy dissection teacher) without going very deep. And you always leave the object in until a victim reaches teh hospital. Even the paramedics won't remove an imbedded object.
