Hi! I'm still rather giddy over the whole Star Trek thing. I highly doubt that's going away.

I cleaned up my flist some. Removed a few communities, defriended a couple of wanky h0rs and an entitlement h0r or three. All in all, I think the new alignment of the flist shall make me happier.

My evil plan has been discovered, by the way. Last year, I killed fests. This year, I've done my best to kill fandom. What those plucky girl detectives don't know is that next year, I attempt to kill the internet. It's all part of my plan to punish Al Gore for causing global warming :(.

I sort of accidentally overdrew my checking account. See, I forgot that I'd been responsible and paid all my bills early. So I hit the panic stage on Tuesday, paid them all AGAIN on Wednesday and overdrew my account. God, I'm a moron, sometimes. I need to remember when I've been responsible or I will never get to kill the internet.

I have these random thinkythoughts on how I ship a certain set of tropes, not so much the actual characters. Like - I love best friends that fall in love. I love snarky dialogue. I love interesting backgrounds. I love well-developed friendships that are so intimate that it's a struggle to make them more. Do you find yourself shipping tropes moreso than characters or is it just the characters?

Cause I've noticed that the H/D shippers on my flist gravitate towards the Kirk/Spock where there's still some sort of rivalry there. I like the Kirk/Spock, don't get me wrong, but god do I love the friends-into-more Kirk/McCoy (or McCoy/Kirk).

Also - when did fandom stop putting the "top" partner first? *shakes cane* You kids get off my lawn!

ILU2.

I really do need to remember when I've been responsible. This stupidity cost me 90 bucks in overdraft fees and 900 bucks in overpaid bills that I can't recoup. I can apply some of it to future payments (like, my cell phone bill is now paid up for two months) but some of it just got sucked into the ether (like my student loans where it got applied to the end of my loan, not my next payment).

And duh on the Phils thing. Why do you think the Pens are still in the playoffs? If the Pirates were any good, I'd be all over that. As it is, I'm left with no one to support in baseball.

I think... (urgh, you made me think in the morning!) I think that I mostly ship characters, but then I also anti-ship tropes. *g* I can't remember a single pairing where the characters are enemies or hate each other in canon that I haven't disliked and actively non-read.

I gravitate towards pairings where the characters are friends (so I can develop it into more) or there's a difference in power between them along with a huge amount of respect (at least from one of them). Um. I do ship tropes when I break it down like this, don't I? :D

(I've written a lot of other things for exchanges and challenges, though.)

Edited also: pls not to be killing the Internets? I am using it. ;)

Eek! I would apologize but I like how it adds to the discussion on shipping tropes versus characters so I shan't.

(also, random insertion, RENJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

It's probably a good mixture of both, then. After thinking about it a bit more (and it's 130 in the morning and I need to go to bed as I have to be up in 4 hours GAH darn you insomnia), I think I ship both. Like - I've read the BFF thing in other fandoms and simply wasn't attracted at all.

Oh man, exchanges and challenges are separate beasts from other writings. I always like a challenge, though, so that's probably why I think that. I always volunteer for like Voldemort/Blaise Zabini or other characters no one else would write.

I'll hold off on killing the internets cause you asked nicely. My evil plan shall have to wait. I don't make a very good Lord of the Sith, do I?

Icon has nothing to do with the babble above. I chose it as it's the closest one I have to relate to yours :/. I need a Renji icon or five.

Seriously, lady, killing the net is not a good thing.

Yeah, I think I tend to ship tropes. If by tropes, you mean seriously emotionally retarded idiotic boys who border on psychotic.

Proof: Snarry (emotionally retarded--can by borderline psychotic) Kubota/Tokito (So emotionally retarded, Kubota definitely is a sociopath with all the murdering people and stuff) Soubi/Ritsuka (emotionally retarded and Soubi is a twenty year old man asking a twelve year old boy to "take" him.) Ryuk/Light (Ryuk is death god and Light is a sociopathic killer, nuff said). And it goes on.

Hmmm... shipping tropes? I guess... sorta... I'm like you in the friends becoming more but obv not always beacuse harry/ron *avada kedavras oneself* but I do see myself tending toward the minor characters more so. In such usually the ones that i can identify with (but not always) as in cook/freddie in SKiNS - they're friends but other than that i can't really put myself in their shoes but i have enjoyed writing them. Also chekhov/sulu - freinds, probably? But it something more and i'm not exactly sure what?

"top" partner first... yeah i sorta agree with you but also with Lee. I agree that should you expect top seamus then top seamus is what you should get - but what do you do if they flip-flop? *imagines flipflopping deamus* Cause trusst me, even though some guys JUST top there are others who like a bit of both *ahem*

Yeah, oh god. The Harry/Ron. *shudders* So maybe it's a combination? Like - it's gotta hit the trope buttons AND have characters that you want in it? Or maybe it's that you can't break up a canon couple that you like? IDK if you like the Ron/Hermione bits or not. But like - I like Kirk/Spock but I love Spock/Uhura, yanno? So it's hard for me to break them up because they work for me.

I don't mind the flipflopping at all! And also - I think you just shared your own preferences :P Just FYI :P

Ahaha! It's Harry/Draco no matter who tops. Draco/Harry is a no no. You just don't say it that way. :D

It's intresting about the pairing fixation, though. The other day I was about to wax rhapsodic of how it's so very easy to lure me into shipping Kirk/McCoy (this order because Kirk is the centre of the universe even if he bottomed for everyone in the said universe) since I love my guys feisty, passionate and rivalry, and then I went all O.o when I realised they are the friend pairing that isn't supposed to do much for me.

I think it's partly because so far I haven't read all that hot and passionate Kirk/Spock (this order because it makes 'Kock' the next logical step) encounters. Their rivalry works for me but the logical and cool nature of Spock does not break often and believably enough to make it all that passionate, whereas McCoy is a feisty friend and fights Kirk back every opportunity he gets. So there's that. ♥

Do you find yourself shipping tropes moreso than characters or is it just the characters?

Characters, really. Although I'm really into multiple pairings for New Trek, which I'm not always. I mean, Kirk/McCoy is probably edging the others out just slightly, but I'm also extremely fond of Kirk/Spock, Kirk/Spock/Uhura, and Spock/Uhura, so.

Also - when did fandom stop putting the "top" partner first? *shakes cane* You kids get off my lawn!

Heeeee. You oldtimer, you. I have to admit, I've been reading a lot of the kink meme, and things like "S/K" when it's Sulu/Kirk weird me out some.

I love Spock/Uhura. I'm having this problem breaking up canon pairings that I like. I simply can't do it most of the time. So the Kirk/Spock is really hard for me.

It's interesting that it's characters. Are you multi-fandom? Do you find that it's a certain character type or is it just the people? The rakish captain in one fandom, the introverted quiet guy in that fandom?

Hee! I just sort of thought that was the way it was. I'm a bit geeky like that, methinks. I spent a lot of time lurking before joining fandom and saw all these discussions on how to list pairings and proper headers and blahblahblah. It's why my headers are ginormous and I list characters in a certain way. I'm totally oldskool, bb.

That is odd when people don't spell out the names. Like - how the hell are you supposed to know what 's' name they're using? Is it Sarek? Sulu? Spock? Snape?! List out the name, darnit! *shakes cane* Get off my lawn, you kids!*grins*

ahahahaha, kill the internet. - you ARE an evil mastermind! It's good to have goals. :p

Do you find yourself shipping tropes moreso than characters or is it just the characters?

Definitely the tropes for me. I love the bickering-not-couple-but-should-be, and also best-friends-and-possibly-more. I think the vast majority of my favorite pairings fall into one or both of those categories - even back before I knew what fandom/shipping was, the couples I'd want to be together in movies or television were usually one of these. :D

And am I a bad fangirl for not know that the "top" is supposed to be listed first in a pairing? I'd never heard/noticed that before!

Date: 2009-05-25 06:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] midnight-birth.livejournal.com
Top partner first is a huge OCD point of mine. I always put it first. To me, it's kind of important, and I like to know things like that. (For example, for Draco/Harry, I prefer Draco on top when reading and writing). The only place I always put them the same are my tags, just so I don't have to have two tags for the same pairing. (They'd still specify in the fic itself). And I guess with a bunch of my OTP's, I have a definite preference, like Draco/Harry or Sirius/Remus.

Hm.. Tropes. I guess I do kind of. I do love my love/hate relationships, I have to admit. I heavily gravitate towards those if the fandom offers an opportunity. I also do like best friends fics. And I love fics of bringing together two characters that have never given each other a second thought and are completely strange (e.g.Firenze/Ginny). So yeah, I guess I do lean towards tropes. Though I have been noticing how lately I'll about writing any pairing regardless, though in that case I will often shape it into a trope of my preference. :D

Cough, it's traditional in Star Trek (aka all big Startrek mailing lists) to sort by rank. Only exception is O/K (Odo/Kira) in DS9, guess that's because K/O sounds so negative :)

Also, best friends falling in love makes me go all goooo and woozy and loveydovey. K/Mc has it all. (In TOS I also ship S/Mc but they have more this antagonists-get-together background and I didn't get enough NewUniverse S/Mc vibes.)

And happy to read you! *waves from the addict corner*

Oh man, yes, on the best friends falling in love making me goooooo too. I'm not even a goooooo person but if it's done right, I simply melt.

I've been enjoying your stories and can't wait to read more!

I agree with the S/Mc vibes. I didn't really see that much but IDK if it's just because they didn't have as many interactions as we were gifted with in TOS.
