My brain is done dead broke. My tl;dr response in summation - not all abuse is physical. Learn it and embrace it.
For those of you that didn't see previous post - my dad had some issues while getting a knee replacement. He's basically fine now. My older sister is with him while he's in hospital in Harrisburg, PA.
I sprung my mum from hospital yesterday. She had the drainage tube removed on Monday and delighted in giving me details of what happened as it came out. Suffice to say that, yes, I did pass out, thanks muchly. I didn't need to hear that it gurgled and stuff came out :/.
Was given five things to talk about by
anathema91 They are -
1. Nose licking
2. At Last... Claimed
3. Thunder
4. "And, um, can you do us a favor and look really grumpy?"
5. Gambit-induced squeegasms
1.) Nose licking. See. Um. Well. It turns out that when I'm really really really really drunk, I lick people. And my aim isn't so good. So I licked someone's nose. Twice. Or maybe it was three times. The other thing that happens when I get trolleyed? I forget things, too. Not that being trolleyed really does that to me as I do that regardless but it's nice to have that excuse. Anyway - yes. I've licked noses and I'm not ashamed of it or the photographic evidence of it.
2.) At Last... Claimed (to be read out loud as "At Last dot dot dot Claimed"). IMHO - this is the best piece of fanfiction ever. I check on this story on a weekly basis to see if there have been any updates to it. It's crack. I swear that the author of this story inserts crack into the story to make it just that addictive. It's amazing. It's got veelas, dumbledore!bashing, ginny!bashing, snupin, mpreg, multiple pregnancies, nursing the almighty malfoy!veela!cock, literal assbabies being birthed right at Draco's face and more! Who could possibly ask for anything else in a piece of fanfiction? Not me!
3.) Thunder is my car.

The poor thing is sorely abused by me.
4.) "And, um, can you do us a favor and look really grumpy?"
This is what I get for doing a favor for someone :P. See, Wyatt Earp looked really really grumpy. And he was sort of hot. But then he turned into Virgil or the other Earp brother and looked even MORE grumpy and he got EVEN HOTTER. So
anathema91 and I wanted our picture with him but we didn't want him to smile so I blushed and stammered out "And, um, can you do us a favor and look really grumpy?" and then I might have given a self-conscious giggle or two. Yes, I turned into a fawning fangirl but, in my defence, he was hot. and it was for
anathema91.
5.) Tonight, I had a ginormous and rather embarrassing Gambit-induced squeegasm. I moaned out in a giant shout that sounded like I was orgasming "OH MY GOD" as I finally caught the tv spots for the upcoming Wolverine movie. Here you watch them and see if you don't have a squeegasm. Specifically, the third one. Gambit tosses cards and blows up shit and then he climbs up a motherfucking building? OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!!!!!
This movie cannot come soon enough. I think I might have to go by myself the first time so that when I moan and shout, I do not embarrass the person with me because OH MY GOD. Gambit. GAMBIT. a;fkja;sdlfkjas;dlfjk
The last one reminds me of a discussion I was having with some flist members on how I found fandom. Wolverine/Gambit was my first slash pairing. I fell in love with Gambit as a small child when the cartoons were on and I've only grown to love him more through the comics and such. I was never a huge Wolverine fan until I discovered slash with them.
I started in fandoms when I was trying to cheat my way through Knights of the Old Republic. I suspected that my character was Revan and I wanted validation of that. I didn't find the cheats but I did find fanfiction. I devoured as much as I could, wrote some interesting stories and started my first abandoned WIP. From there, after I'd read every single piece of KOTOR fanfiction, I was on ff.net and searched for Gambit. It was love with slash at first read. I read the crappiest wolverine/gambit fic ever but I didn't care because it was opening my horizons so much. Even now, I love it and it's so schmoopy and stuff. After that, I searched for H/D, discovered
emmagrant01 and found LJ and the rest is basically history.
I keep looking at my KOTOR fic and I really really want to finish it but I've been so involved in HP that it's hard to contemplate going back to it. I've lost the thread and the story.

Technically I found fandom years ago, back in high school when I went looking for everything I could find about the movie Newsies and stumbled onto a wealth of fanfic. Years later, I started off on Fanfiction.net (*shudders*) looking for fic for The Outsiders, and then started reading HP stuff (Remus/Sirius) because there wasn't much good Outsiders fic. Some writers on FF.net had links to their LJ's, and the rest is history.

Oh man! Newsies AND Outsiders? Do you have any links to any good stuff from there? Oh man *flails*

Date: 2009-02-21 12:16 am (UTC)Well...as I recall it wasn't so much good as it simply wasn't terrible, if you know what I mean? Plus, during my early days in fandom I generally read a lot of het and gen rather than slash. But let me see what I have bookmarked...
Okay. I have always been a major Darry fangirl, so a lot of the fics I have for The Outsiders feature him in a prominent role.
The Chaperone: It looks like a two-chapter fic, but it's actually two separate vignettes featuring Pony-Darry interaction.
Ten Years Later: Future fic by the same author as the one above. Frankly, I don't remember anything about this one, but I'll just throw it out there. ;-)
Tulsa: Okay, this has a major Mary Sue, aka a sister for the boys, but as I recall it was reasonably well written and enjoyable. Going Home Again is the sequel, set a few decades later. The sequel is angsty if you're a Darry fan.
I had others bookmarked but they're even worse than those! :-P
As for Newsies, I seem to have lost all my favorites there. The only fics from that fandom that I've read recently have been from Yuletide, which I assume you've already checked out.

Date: 2009-02-19 04:34 pm (UTC)i'm not even touching the main essay. it's too early for me to get angry. all i can say is... i think i remember seeing their batshittery elsewhere. maybe another essay?
fandom! ah, i can still remember. i started out as an anime fan and i had had internet installed only very recently. i would sift through badly-designed geocities, angelfire and tripod fansites (called "shrines" back then, i don't know if that's still used) that i found via some websites that worked as directories (like anipike (http://www.anipike.com/classic/)) and listed a huge number of websites of... varying quality. i would spend all day looking at different
yaoiwebsites and saving images to floppy disks :p i didn't read fanfic back then. i didn't perceive fandom as a community back then, since each website felt like an isolated entity. the only means of communication i had with people were guestbooks and email. at some point later i started reading fanfic, which ended up directing me to ff.net, among others. i also became a zelda fan, so i started looking up fan sites, which led me to register on a forum and some members over there had LJs and... well, here i am. this was from 1999-ish to 2006as for HP fandom, i was aware that there was a huge fan community, i knew about the slash and the ship wars and everything, but i didn't get really involved with it until i began reading SBP. i cannot remember for the life of me exactly how i found the SBP in the first place, and that frustrates me to no end.

That's so cool! What a very interesting way of finding a fandom community. You're right - all the scattered websites don't help much. That's how the Wolverine/Gambit ship is - there are just all these websites and not too much community that I ever found. The only community I actually found on Yahoo was very uninviting to newcomers.
Yanno - I've never played Zelda :/
As far as SBP - I think angels sang the url to you. ;)
Linked from the terri-testing post...
Date: 2009-02-21 10:06 pm (UTC)But then I got called a "Snape-hater" for saying the man screwed his own life up and that his Occlumency "lessons" came waaaay closer to qualifying as "mind-rape" than Ron Confunding that Muggle examiner.
Go figure.
Re: Linked from the terri-testing post...
Date: 2009-02-21 10:16 pm (UTC)I'm a bit sensitive about issues of abuse given my history (my dad abused me in multiple forms until I was 14). It's one of the reasons I reacted so strongly to terri_testing's point that Petunia wasn't an abuser (no matter how she clarified later in another post).
I guess I just don't get how people can possibly be so attached to someone/something/some character that they don't see the faults of said object of their devotion. I love Seamus Finnigan but that doesn't mean that I don't see that he's a judgmental douchebag that trusts his mum way too easily. I like Snape but I see him for what he is and that's a bitter old man that holds a grudge for WAY too long.
I agree with you - the Occlumency lessons were definitely more like mind-rape than anything else in the books. But obviously it's all Harry Potter and Dumbledore's fault cause Dumbledore totes made him do those lessons and, also, Dumbledore sneezed. *winks*
Re: Linked from the terri-testing post...
Date: 2009-02-21 10:24 pm (UTC)On a certain level, I can understand Snape's hatred of Harry: "If that brat had never been born she'd still be alive." I think he targeted Neville because he wished Voldemort had gone after him instead.
I'm not excusing either--only an utter douchebag would take out his issues on eleven-year-old kids.
Snape refused to take responsibility for his choices and it ended up biting him in the ass. And yet he kept making those bad choices.
Dumbledore, meanwhile, learned from the results of his bad choices. Same with Harry.
But they say Snape's the only one who does any changing. Yes, because everyone except him is really just pretending to be good--the real people are the ones we see when they're at their worst. Save for Snapeypoo, of course.
*sigh*
Re: Linked from the terri-testing post...
Date: 2009-02-21 10:34 pm (UTC)I understand the targeting, I get the reasoning but oh man - srsly. "You" do not get to say it's not abuse because Petunia/Snape/Vernon/Dudley/Voldie were all misunderstood speshul snowflakes just waiting for their chance to sparkle in the sun until that Ebil Dumbledore came by and melted them.
I do love the idea of Dumbledore, the supercomputer from the Matrix that he is, playing everyone like puppets on strings. I would totally and completely read that crossover.
The only thing that would have made this essay (or the follow-up post) even better would've been some Molly!bashing and a comparison as to how Molly is a worse mother than Petunia.
Re: Linked from the terri-testing post...
Date: 2009-02-21 10:36 pm (UTC)And I'm surprised it didn't get into Molly-bashing, but hey, it's still early.
Re: Linked from the terri-testing post...
Date: 2009-02-21 10:38 pm (UTC)It definitely is still early. I'll eagerly await that defence of Petunia ;).
Also - I saw that you're in Gilbert! How awesome to meet fellow Arizonan people! I keep wondering if I'm the only one but then I get proven wrong :D! *happy dance*

Ah, fandom. I lurked around this one X-Files fanfic archive back in college, and I think I was on some Yahoo! discussion group. Not that I contributed much. Or at all. :p But I think Leaky was the first HP site I found, and then I stumbled on ff.net, and then I followed this one author to Checkmated, and followed another the LJ, where I really discovered slash, and ta-da! Here I am. :)

How did I get into fandom?
I used to spend a lot of time on the Buffy spoiler/discussion boards during the show's first few seasons, and occasionally fic would make it's way over, but I never really saw the point to it back then, although I remember reading a fantastic future fic where Buffy was a gym teacher (retired) and she got back together with Angel for the last 6 months of her life.
Then I watched Angel, and wanted more Wesley/Lilah. There wasn't much out there, so that was that.
It wasn't until HP that I went looking for Ron/Hermione porn. (wait, am I allowed to say that on your lj?) Which lead to Harry/Ginny very briefly. Which lead to Harry/Draco and eventually Snape/Lupin. I got a fandom lj so that I could comment on
Now Merlin is seriously eating up my brain.

Date: 2009-02-20 05:46 am (UTC)The first fanfic I read was in the Roswell fandom. I vaguely remember reading some really bad Maria/Michael story where she called him Spaceboy and made a really cheesy comment about his cock being "outta this world.". It was so bad. After that, I avoided fanfic for quite some time. I found HP fanfic when I clicked a link that someone posted in a discussion thread on imdb for either CoS or PoA. Not sure which. That link was to HP & the Psychic Serpent on FA.

no subject
Date: 2009-02-20 08:46 pm (UTC)As for the Psychic Serpent... I liked it at the time, but that was 5 years ago, and I was much less picky then, so I'm not sure whether or not I'd still like it if I read it now. I've wanted to go back and re-read it, but part of me is afraid to, cuz if it sucked, I'd be really disappointed.
And sadly, no it's not code for the willy. (Though Harry's willy does indeed get some action.)
