Perhaps this is going to be wanky but perhaps not...

Is anyone really truly shocked that a person who began in fandom with copy/pasting other people's works into her own livejournal would then plaigarise after being called on the copy/pasting? Seriously?

I have no sympathy whatsoever for those that are shocked and upset over this. None whatsoever. Sorry (not really) but there you have it.

In less wanky news... I'm up to 5 lbs lost. My coworker told me my ass was looking perky... should I be worried?

I'm not shocked, no. But tbh, I'm more concerned that people seem to be under the impression that their fan fiction is their intellectual property. Uh, no, it is not. o.O Individual turns of phrase/stylistic devices here or there, fanfic is derivative and cannot actually be intellectual property. It's extremely rude (not to mention an easy ticket out of fandom) to take other people's fanfic and pass it off as your own, but it's not actually illegal (like stealing is).

Honestly, I'm just annoyed that so many people are acting shocked and appalled that this person did this and the drama over ZOMG!How could she do this to me/fandom/my comm/whatevah.

I agree that the fanfic isn't the author's property because the world isn't their own. However, their stylistic devises are their own and, even if it isn't stealing, should still be respected. I use the same type of phrasing and style in my original as I do in my fanfic for the most part. Take the plot, take the characterisations, take the cliche but the way I write it? That's just not cool.

I could see if people were upset because they had had these "me" things taken from them but to get upset that a known repeat offender did it to someone else? I don't get that at all.

I'm thinking that this isn't making sense but it really does in my head. To sum up the rambling - I agree with you for the most part.

Should you be worried? It depends on how old you are. I (almost 40) would be thrilled that anyone would call any part of my body "perky"!

I'm 28 and, unfortunately, soon to be 29. I don't mind so much except this coworker is in her 50's, has a habit of peeing herself and works right outside my office door.

Ha! Yea, you might want to be worried. Your coworker sounds certifiable to me! :)

She is quite a character. A very nice lady, don't get me wrong but as a coworker? Not so nice. She also likes to try to pass off her mistakes onto me whenever possible. It's complete crap. But... she is very nice about sharing holidays and office politics and things.

I wasn't terribly surprised.... her original 'mistakes' always stayed with me and tainted her image.

Yay on the 5lbs lost! :D (I'm back to having a fat day, woe...)

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with her "own" works either. I read two of them and the one I was tricked into reading... which didn't make me happy.

Honestly, if you're going to plaigarise someone, make it the good stuff, not the shite stuff.

Also - *woe* on the "fat day". That really stinks.

Basically, someone fairly new to fandom but in a few comms was found out to be plagiarising other people's works. There is much OMG'ing going on right now but, honestly, this person got their start copying people's works into their lj's as "recs" but forgot to mention the authors.

I just don't get the shock and amazement, basically.

Be glad for your other world ;).

I'm not paying that much attention to all of that, but I guess I wouldn't necessarily assume that someone who copied & pasted fics in his/her journal would move on to plagiarism, no. But, I am not shocked that it happened, in a general sense.

Also, I probably wouldn't freak out about someone plagiarized from me. I'm just not sure that I would care.

*sigh* I don't see the point of copying. How is that fun? I guess some people are more looking for the instant gratification of "omg u r awesome" reviews than the slower satisfaction of seeing yourself get better at something over time.

Date: 2006-09-19 10:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com
C/P'ing without crediting is the same as plagiarism but much less subtle. That she moved on to something more subtle really isn't that much of a shock.

If someone takes a plot or something from me, fine, it wasn't mine to begin with unless it's some of the few original works I have on this journal. But the style and flow? That's all me. I'd be upset about that if I ever caught someone doing it.

Yeah, I don't get it either. IT's really just the fastlane to a quick boot out of fandom... not the fastlane to popularity.

I'm not shocked or surprised, and knew I had recognised that person's sn from before for the same thing, but it's still a fucked up thing to do, and to make up bullshit excuses for it, pfft. Bitch, please (the person, not you).

Date: 2006-09-19 11:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com
It really is and I heard about the excuses but didn't get to see them, unfortunately.

I'm right there with you on the bitchplease.

Sometimes, I wonder if maybe fandom doesn't need to go see a counselor... fandom keeps letting people pull the same crap and then goes OHNOEZ over it and then rinse lather repeat.

It looks like all the entries are now deleted, but one of the last posts turned out to be a copied story too. fandom_wank over on journalfen has the details.

Now I wish I had thought to screencap the Virgin Gay Boys entry that's gone. And I admittedly feel idiotic for thinking that the person actually wrote it (ok, I didn't read it, but thought 'oh, look non-hp stuff' has been left up)

Thanks for pointing that out. I'd not gone to fandom wank in awhile.

Yeah, basically, I've the attitude fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I've not trusted her, honestly and was mildly embarrassed to be in a comm with her. Her quality was sub-par and to find out she ripped off other people's works to even achieve that quality? It's ridiculous.

I'd much rather toil away and write what I do than plagiarise someone else's works.

See, I'm not shocked, but I genuinely belive in giving people second chances, you know? I thought I would give her/him/whatever the fuck s/he is the benefit of the doubt. If it had been an honest mistake the first time, then what a nasty introduction to the HP fandom, having these authors you apparently like jumping all over you. So I backed off and said to myself, okay, let's see what s/he does next. And it seemed that what came next was some truly terrible n00b fic cross-posted absolutely everywhere, but that's hardly strange or unusual, so fine. I never said another word. So then this was not a complete shock, but I figured it deserved a bigger smackdown than if it had been someone else, you know? Especially because s/he just does not get the point. Copying and pasting someone else's fic is not not-plagiarism because "all fanfic is plagiarised from JKR" (paraphrase of the basic argument s/he was going for). It's a completely different thing.

No, they're not our characters, and not a one of us invented the concepts of magic, sex, boarding school, or whatever else you could cite. If we all had to cite a source every time we'd been inspired or intrigued by another fanfic author's idea (never mind canon!!), our fics would be ridden with citations. We take it for granted that it's never going to be 100% original. But a direct copy/paste of another person's fic? Not cool. IMO.

Date: 2006-09-20 09:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com
Yeah, second chances are good most of the time. My problem was that she was so unrepetent in the first instances that I just knew she'd do it again... but that could also be that I'm an untrusting bitch.

See, the problem that you have is that you are far too nice and believe the best in people... let me enroll you in wook's school of meanness *winks* Just kidding of course. I like that you were willing to give her a second chance. It's her problem that she spat on that.

My problem with the reactions is that there are people that are shocked that she would do this. There are emo posts about *woe-she-betrayed-me/mycomm/mywhatever*.

Her argument is shite, to put it bluntly. Just because we didn't invent the world or whatever doesn't mean that the phrasing and the way we go about stories don't deserve the respect of either crediting and/or not plagiarising.

Definitely not cool to c/p other people's works. Also - that crossposting everywhere? GAH, that was so annoying, especially her red devil icon. I was tricked into reading some fic that was truly horrendous by her and I'm now scared that if she had to plagiarise to even reach THAT level of skill, what would she have put out without the plagiarising?

GOD, I hated that icon!! I saw someone else's vaguely worded post about it and knew at once to whom it was referring!!

Yeah, the shock is maybe a bit silly. I don't think I was too trusting - I was willing to give her a second chance, but watching carefully, you know? There's no point being an idiot about it. :P
