Part 1
Dean was nervous, very very nervous, to be standing in front of all these people watching him. He'd listened to his new friend, Seamus, rattle on and on throughout their train ride about the various Houses and the whole of the process as he knew it. When the other boy in their compartment had lost his toad, Seamus had rushed out to help him and Dean had breathed a sigh of relief at the silence.
It wasn't that he didn't appreciate Seamus's company. It was soothing and comforting, in a way. He'd never experienced anything like Seamus but it felt like they'd been friends. It could be that Seamus had shared his life story twice so far but it might also be his sense of humour and the way that Dean hadn't had time to be nervous until now because Seamus had been making him laugh.
Seamus hadn't really cared about what House he'd gotten into. He'd had far too much to say about all of them. Dean, though, didn't think that he'd fit into any House. He wasn't particularly outgoing so he didn't think Hufflepuff would be a good fit. He wasn't particularly bright and that eliminated Ravenclaw. He wasn't particularly ambitious and that made him discard Slytherin. In the end, he decided on Gryffindor because that's where the Hat had shouted for Seamus.
The Hat had quite a bit to say about his curiosity. Just as it was about to shout out a name, Dean politely requested Gryffindor. The Hat muttered and mumbled before wishing him well and placing him where he'd wanted.
He gratefully slid off the stool and smiled as Seamus applauded loudest of all.

Seamus was nervous, very very nervous, as he sat at the table with the rest of the Gryffindors. He was relieved when Neville joined him. They'd had a good conversation on the train though it was more Seamus talking and Neville and Dean listening. The story about the man and his lion had gone over really well. Dean had seemed particularly impressed when Seamus had rambled on about the Houses and what his mam had told him. If he'd made a few stories up about different traits, then it could be attributed to his propensity for story telling.
The Hat had taken forever to Sort him. He'd been willing to go anywhere. His mam'd been a Hufflepuff and there twasn't a thing wrong with that. His quick thinking wit had tempted the Hat towards Ravenclaw but Seamus hadn't been sure of that one. He'd a thirst to be the best and the Hat had nattered on about Slytherin. In the end, he'd gone to Gryffindor and that'd been alright with him.
He wasn't sure why he was in Gryffindor as he wasn't particularly brave. That would be why he was currently sitting there chanting Gryffindor under his breath as the Hat went onto Dean's head. He'd do better in Gryffindor if Dean were there, he just knew it. Hands aching as he applauded loudest of them all, Seamus leapt up from the table to stand on the bench before one of his fellow Gryffindors pulled him back down.

Dinner that night was filled with laughter and Seamus telling jokes. His family had always been outgoing though less polite people would be tempted to say raucous and loud. Neville was quiet and Harry goggled at everything. Hermione seemed a bit of a know it all and Ron was busy avoiding his older brothers. Seamus thought he'd get along splendidly with them.
After dinner ended, Dean and Seamus followed the Prefects up the stairs and around Hogwarts. Though his mam had told him stories, they hadn't done much to prepare Seamus for the wonder and overwhelming size of the castle. Their house at home was a bit on the small side, especially as he'd had to share a bedroom with his two brothers. He was just glad that he'd not been born a girl. After all, there were five of them to a single room.
Thinking of his family so far away, Seamus felt homesick. The companionship at dinner had tamed it a bit but the feel of Dean slinging a companionable arm over his shoulders soothed it completely.
Dean, on the other hand, wasn't feeling any better since dinner. He'd been glad for Seamus's ramblings as they'd taken attention off of him as he'd stared all around. Sure, Professor Sprout had told him a bit about Hogwarts when he'd asked but no one had told him about the shifting staircases.
When he looked to the side, he saw that, maybe, Seamus was feeling the same way. He flung an arm around his new friend's shoulders and that grin, quick and flippant and grateful, had that ball of tension easing away from his gut. Dean might be new to all this but so was Seamus. He wasn't alone.
They'd get through this together.
As always, I'd love to hear what you think.

Date: 2006-12-19 03:04 am (UTC)That line described perfectly exactly how I always imagined Dean. If I had to say ONE sentence to sum him up, that would be a perfect one. :)
It's a great story! I love it!
