Summary: The five times Kirk almost says "I love you" to Bones and the first time he finally does.
A/N: Written for the prompt from the summary given to me by [livejournal.com profile] inell. Unbeta'd.

1.) He's drunk and he's known McCoy for all of five days when he decides he loves McCoy. "Lubalu, m'bones." Bones merely pats him on the head like he's a particularly good dog. In retribution, he licks Bones's face.

2.) He's got Harrison bent in half as he fucks the man hard. Harrison's the best fuck he's ever had. He's Southern, for one thing. For another, he's got full, fuckable lips. For a third, he's got this hair that flops just right. For a fourth, he's got expressive and thick eyebrows. For a fifth, he's got the best cock ever. It's not his fault, then, that as he comes, he pants out, "Bones, fuck, Bones, I love – " and then catches himself. "I love your bones," he finishes lamely. Harrison seems to buy it, though.

3.) He keeps going and going, running on sheer adrenaline and nerves after the Narada. There are too many things that have to be seen to. Bones catches him as he walks in to the medbay to check on Pike. The hypospray comes out of nowhere, it's in his neck before he realizes and he hears Bones mutter, "for your own good, Jim." He tries to respond "love you, too" but the sedative takes effect too quickly. He's out like a light and doesn't even get the pleasure of feeling Bones carry him to a bed, tuck him in and kiss him on the forehead. He doesn't get to see the way that Pike takes it all in, either.

4.) He's in the middle of an interrogation torture session. His brain doesn't want to believe him but his heart is telling him that there's no way that Bones would be doing this to him, no way that he would be wielding the scalpel this way while demanding information.

"Captain James T Kirk, Captain of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701," he says in response to another try to get information out of him. Jim is in so much pain that he can't remember what they want, can't hear the questions over the sound of his pulse in his ears. He hears the muted murmur of the voice again and he answers with the standard answer, "Captain James T Kirk, Captain of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701." He keeps repeating himself as the alien (not Bones, Bones wouldn't do this no matter what his eyes swear they're seeing and his ears swear they're hearing) cuts into his thigh. He can't help screaming his answer this time.

The aliens must've decided on another track because Bones's voice is much more gentle the next time he surfaces. "Jim?" he hears the alien ask in Bones's voice. He'll have to tell the cultural sciences people about the way they can influence their victims to experience their loved ones as the torturers. He's certain that at least one of the officers can make a report on it. The thought distracts from the way that the alien Bones is currently poking lightly at his injuries.

There's still pain (oh god is there still pain) but there's also so much gentleness. If the aliens had tried this ages ago, he probably would've given them everything. This is the sort of action he believes Bones would make. Still, the thought sobers him and cuts through the haze of pain enough that he mutters, "Captain James T. Kirk, Captain of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701".

"Get us out of here," Bones says. "Scotty, now."

The voice cracks as Bones touches his cheek and Jim's resolve to not speak about anything other than his name, rank and ship cracks, as well.

"Don't cut me again, Bones, I love you. Please stop cutting me. It hurts."

"I know, Jim, I know. We're going to get you out of here." For the first time in days, Bones's voice is soft and gentle, mirroring the way that his hand brushes down Jim's cheek and he turns in towards it before remembering that he's undergoing torture.

"Captain James T Kirk, Captain of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701."

5.) Jim fakes sleep whenever Bones checks on him. He's fairly certain that it had been the real Bones he'd said those three words to. From the stilted conversations before Jim had taken to faking sleep, Bones obviously doesn't reciprocate anything. After a week in medbay, though, he can't fake sleep any longer as Bones is the one currently discharging him to his own quarters.

"Jim," Bones starts as they finish up the paperwork. Jim can see where he's going next and he starts to panic. "About the – "

"Psychotropic drugs," he says baldly. "We done here?"

Bones reaches out a hand, resting it over Jim's where it braces against the bed, ready to help push him off the bed and get him the hell out of this medbay. "If you – "

"Let it go, Bones."

"All right." Bones does, letting go of Jim's hand. Jim slides off the bed and strides towards the door, trying for his normal strut but it's hard when he has muscles knitting and flesh healing. "Jim?"

He pauses at the door and then looks back at Bones. "Yeah?"

"If you meant it, I…" Bones's voice trails off while his hands flop out to the sides and then come back to his hips. "I…"

"The drugs, Bones, the drugs made me tell you that I love you." He can't make eye contact as he lies so, instead, he hurries away.

And that one time) The door to his quarters hisses open and Jim doesn't turn to look. His head is throbbing in time to the throbbing in his thighs and arms and hands and feet. Breathing in, he can smell the antiseptic scent of the medbay and knows that it's Bones. Jim refuses to acknowledge him. Instead, he falls into the habit that's helped for a week, he feigns sleep.

The bed dips as Bones sits on the edge and then shifts around. Jim barely keeps from flinching as Bones rests his hand on his hip.

"I'm not good at this, Jim," he says quietly.

Jim fakes a snore.

"Keep pretending to be asleep, it makes it easier." Bones's hand drifts up his side and then back down, resting once more on his hip. "I'm just going to say it and you can pretend you slept through it if you want."

The pause after goes on for awhile until Jim wonders if Bones is actually going to say something or if he's going to get up and walk away.

"I can't take it when you suffer like that. It hurts. I'm not used to caring, either, and I'm not good at it. I'm old and I'm cranky so I don't see what you see in me or if you really meant what you said but I've…" his voice trails off again but, this time, Jim reaches up a hand and touches Bones's where it's clutching at his hip. Bones threads his fingers through Jim's and then continues, "But I…"

"I meant it," Jim whispers, still refusing to look at Bones. "Never said it to anyone else but I love you."

"I know," Bones says. The bed shifts and suddenly Bones is wrapped around him. "I do, too."

Continued in Trust You, Too.

As always, I'd love to hear what you thought.

#3 is perfect, especially with Pike watching. :) I love the way it builds towards the end. Poor Jim, having Bones torture him - those are some evil aliens. *hugs them both*

Hee! Thanks! Those aliens totes deserve what they got from the business end of Spock's weaponry and rage. *nods emphatically*

I'm very glad you enjoyed! Also - azkatraz? Yes, no, maybe so? I can't remember :(
