Tonight, the juxtaposition of the reactions of the crowds to the two speeches finally made me believe that 'yes, we can'. While McCain's crowd boo'ed and hissed at every mention of Obama's name, Obama's crowd cheered John McCain. To me, that tells me that the candidate with the right people behind him won because John McCain ran such a dirty campaign and to cheer him, to almost revere him when he was such a vitriolic dickwad, that shows true class.

Now if only the bigots in Arizona hadn't won with the passing of Prop 102.

Proposition 8 in California is still up in the air.

Initiative 1 in Arkansas won which means that gay couples can't adopt kids.

Prop 2 in Florida passed which is the same as the AZ 102.

ETA: err, right. Sorry for the American-centric surely you know exactly what these ballot initiatives are assumption there. Serious apologies. All three have to deal with the ban on homosexual marriage. Prop 8 is, by far, the most serious one as gay marriage is allowed in CA until this bogus bullshit passes. /eta

Bigotry is alive and well but I have hope, a cautiously optimistic hope that Obama, as he's said he didn't support Prop 8 in CA might possibly work to repeal these laws on a federal level. That bigotry has no place in America.

I have hope that, instead of booing and hissing, digging in their heels and stubbornly clinging to the partisan bullshit that's plagued this country for the past 16 years, that those that supported John McCain are willing to reach across the aisle as much as the Obama supporters obviously are.

I'm also glad that I don't have to get married to [livejournal.com profile] anathema91 as it's cold in Canada and she hates my dogs. :P

I'm so overwhelmed right now that I'm crying and biting my lip and biting at my finger as I hold my fist to my mouth. I keep refreshing all the different websites because I don't believe it yet. I thought for sure that, yet again, an election would be stolen. Thank you, America. Thank you.

Prop 8 is passing right now.

I feel like people are so ignorant and am so disappointed in my beautifully liberal state.

I had it out with someone tonight that was against gay marriage and going on about how his kids wouldn't be able to get married if gays were allowed to marry.

I get so irate when people start going on and on about "marriage" being a religious term and how they don't want government dictating what happens in their church but they're a-ok with churches dictating what happens in people's homes whether they believe in that religion or not.

Bigotry. WTF.

Agreed. I turned the TV off whenever the Yes on Prop 8 commercials came on. I couldn't stand looking at them. They were filled with so many wrongs and not enough truths. I was speaking with my mother and she was like "What's next? No interracial marriage?"

And I hate that belief. Prop 8 has NOTHING TO DO WITH CHILDREN! Grrrr! They kept going on and on about how if Prop 8 was passed kids would learn about gay marriage in schools. Marriage isn't taught in schools, it's taught in the home.

This is plain discrimination and that's just not cool.

Maybe Obama can do something about it. Federal government is higher than State after all.

Although I adore San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. He's republican with a gay daughter and voted no on 8. So not all republicans are dumbasses.

The idiot at work tried to set me up with the whole "don't you believe in the freedom to choose and I'm not talking abortion" and I told him he was setting me up for some sort of logical fallacy and I wasn't going to go along with it. I believe in the right of the church to do as it pleases as long as it is reasonable (ie, no sacrifice of innocent wookiees) and I also believe that as far as government should be concerned, no bigotry or discrimination should be practiced. He got all puffy, doing that hovering thing over me and invading my personal space.

Get over it. People are different and are going to love who they love.

I truly hope that in this case, the court system, at the very least, will step in through the appeal process and, once and for all, bigotry such as this will be repealed across the board.

<3 Jerry Sanders, then! It's nice to hear about a shining example of a dude who gets it.

haha, but Obama's people cheered somewhat skeptically at McCain. In the audience shots, people were all "YEEEAAaaahhhhh?????" I thought it was pretty funny. But better than the booing by a long shot.

I'll take skeptical cheering over the booing and the pouting expressions and the whinging and the sobbing "no no no" and all that crap. And did you notice that every single person the camera panned over in the McCain crowd was white and privileged?

From what I can see, Prop 8 is going to pass. And that is so fucking disappointing.

Also? Fucking word about the followers during McCain's speech. I mean, wtf? Sore losers, the entire lot of them.

That's just. I. I've got nothing. We're the greatest country on earth (or at least we have disney :P:P:P:P:P) and we can't even allow people to marry who they want?

Definitely sore losers. GTFover it and start working on fixing the fucking issues.

Yep, so despite California's votes making the win official, I feel like their so full of fail right now that it isn't even funny. D: LOL, Disney!

Wordy mcfucking word. I'll give him the fact that he was a dignified loser, though, even if his crowd wad being a bit stupid.

I don't hate your dogs, you twit.

I was merely concerned about 2 people and 2 dogs in one small apartment, that's all. And about shedding, cuz I like my furniture, and about whether or not they chew up shoes, cuz I LOVE my shoes.

I see nothing wrong with asking questions about the important issues...

PS, I know you're deeply saddened by not having a good excuse to marry me now.

I am. I'm going to try to convince you to run off to Massachusetts with me in January since California is obviously out now. Orrr.... we can do it during Leaky Con!

You hate my dogs even though they don't shed and don't eat shoes. *weeps emo tears* And they're LITTLE so it's not like they'd really mess up your furniture. They're not cats :P:P:P:P:P:P

They are important issues. Far more important than whether we both like the cock regardless of being married to one another.

Emo tears... you mean crocodile tears. Yer so full of shit.

But I still love you. (enough to give you my shirtless Christian icon)

Shoes and cock are both important issues. But we agree on both, so that's okay. ♥

if only passing an amendment required 2/3 of the vote

Date: 2008-11-05 06:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com
Meh - I'd still rather not have that, regardless of the outcome. The fact is that the majority is still the majority and it shouldn't require 86% of actual voters to pass any sort of proposition.

Besides, this proposition rightly deserves being challenged in the court system and having the courts hand down a "discrimination ain't allowed" ruling.

i happen to think that any amendment to the constitution is a bigger deal than a law. 67% is a common practice

i am worried in the short term. about people losing insurance benefits. all i can do now is hope for the best

Date: 2008-11-05 06:41 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com
An amendment to the constitution is a law. It's one that can be repealed and be declared unconstitional at a federal level. It's happened on a nationwide basis so I'm hopeful that it'll happen at a state level as well. That's what happened in New York and Connecticut.

51% is the majority, not 67%, not 87%. That is what the majority is. If the majority speaks, whether I agree with them or not, I'm not willing to say that you have to count the people who are too lazy to get out and vote as an automatic no whether the law is one that I agree with or not. I'm not going to change the rules of a democracy just because I loathe one proposition that went through.

As far as laws and benefits - Marriage is already defined as between a man and a woman in law in Arizona. Domestic partner benefits shouldn't be affected by this because domestic partners are not recognized as being married by the state.

*sighs over the propositions*

No props for the props right now.

And I think the fact that I've watched six straight hours of coverage means I need to go to bed. *shifty*

I also have been scarred for life by an auto insurance commercial being done a la rockband.

Yeah, the props just blow from all sides.

I'm crawling in to bed right now.

and o.O dude. some things should be deemed not on. that is one of them.

I thought I heard some booing when McCain was thanking Palin. This amused me.

And, yes, you can send me a card too ^_^ Do you need my address again?

Did you? o.O Man, I hope that happened }:) But seriously, she scares me. Hopefully she stays over -------------------------------->

Then again, she's in the state that elected a convicted felon. He can't vote for himself but let him represent you and cast lots and lots of votes in washington for you! Yeah, that makes sense.

I have your address unless you've moved :D. I'll be putting up a card poll shortly. I'd hoped to commission an artist to make me some cards but that's not really working so well :(
