Nov. 4th, 2008 10:30 pmTonight, the juxtaposition of the reactions of the crowds to the two speeches finally made me believe that 'yes, we can'. While McCain's crowd boo'ed and hissed at every mention of Obama's name, Obama's crowd cheered John McCain. To me, that tells me that the candidate with the right people behind him won because John McCain ran such a dirty campaign and to cheer him, to almost revere him when he was such a vitriolic dickwad, that shows true class.
Now if only the bigots in Arizona hadn't won with the passing of Prop 102.
Proposition 8 in California is still up in the air.
Initiative 1 in Arkansas won which means that gay couples can't adopt kids.
Prop 2 in Florida passed which is the same as the AZ 102.
ETA: err, right. Sorry for the American-centric surely you know exactly what these ballot initiatives are assumption there. Serious apologies. All three have to deal with the ban on homosexual marriage. Prop 8 is, by far, the most serious one as gay marriage is allowed in CA until this bogus bullshit passes. /eta
Bigotry is alive and well but I have hope, a cautiously optimistic hope that Obama, as he's said he didn't support Prop 8 in CA might possibly work to repeal these laws on a federal level. That bigotry has no place in America.
I have hope that, instead of booing and hissing, digging in their heels and stubbornly clinging to the partisan bullshit that's plagued this country for the past 16 years, that those that supported John McCain are willing to reach across the aisle as much as the Obama supporters obviously are.
I'm also glad that I don't have to get married to
anathema91 as it's cold in Canada and she hates my dogs. :P
I'm so overwhelmed right now that I'm crying and biting my lip and biting at my finger as I hold my fist to my mouth. I keep refreshing all the different websites because I don't believe it yet. I thought for sure that, yet again, an election would be stolen. Thank you, America. Thank you.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:10 am (UTC)I feel like people are so ignorant and am so disappointed in my beautifully liberal state.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:23 am (UTC)I get so irate when people start going on and on about "marriage" being a religious term and how they don't want government dictating what happens in their church but they're a-ok with churches dictating what happens in people's homes whether they believe in that religion or not.
Bigotry. WTF.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:40 am (UTC)And I hate that belief. Prop 8 has NOTHING TO DO WITH CHILDREN! Grrrr! They kept going on and on about how if Prop 8 was passed kids would learn about gay marriage in schools. Marriage isn't taught in schools, it's taught in the home.
This is plain discrimination and that's just not cool.
Maybe Obama can do something about it. Federal government is higher than State after all.
Although I adore San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. He's republican with a gay daughter and voted no on 8. So not all republicans are dumbasses.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:46 am (UTC)Get over it. People are different and are going to love who they love.
I truly hope that in this case, the court system, at the very least, will step in through the appeal process and, once and for all, bigotry such as this will be repealed across the board.
<3 Jerry Sanders, then! It's nice to hear about a shining example of a dude who gets it.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:26 am (UTC)Definitely sore losers. GTFover it and start working on fixing the fucking issues.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:16 am (UTC)I was merely concerned about 2 people and 2 dogs in one small apartment, that's all. And about shedding, cuz I like my furniture, and about whether or not they chew up shoes, cuz I LOVE my shoes.
I see nothing wrong with asking questions about the important issues...

Date: 2008-11-05 06:51 am (UTC)But I still love you. (enough to give you my shirtless Christian icon)
Shoes and cock are both important issues. But we agree on both, so that's okay. ♥

Date: 2008-11-05 06:30 am (UTC)Besides, this proposition rightly deserves being challenged in the court system and having the courts hand down a "discrimination ain't allowed" ruling.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:41 am (UTC)51% is the majority, not 67%, not 87%. That is what the majority is. If the majority speaks, whether I agree with them or not, I'm not willing to say that you have to count the people who are too lazy to get out and vote as an automatic no whether the law is one that I agree with or not. I'm not going to change the rules of a democracy just because I loathe one proposition that went through.
As far as laws and benefits - Marriage is already defined as between a man and a woman in law in Arizona. Domestic partner benefits shouldn't be affected by this because domestic partners are not recognized as being married by the state.

And I think the fact that I've watched six straight hours of coverage means I need to go to bed. *shifty*
I also have been scarred for life by an auto insurance commercial being done a la rockband.

I have your address unless you've moved :D. I'll be putting up a card poll shortly. I'd hoped to commission an artist to make me some cards but that's not really working so well :(
