wook77: (slashfest)
[personal profile] wook77
Have been talking to someone about possibly moving [livejournal.com profile] slashfest to its own webdomain like [livejournal.com profile] yuletide does. Then - slashfest would become more like the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide comm - where things are discussed and hashed out and announced.

It'd be a bit different as the two fests are completely different. Plus - I have a few things I'd like to see improved upon from their website. And the whole make a request, claim thing is quite a bit different, too. But the basic premise is still there.

Pros: the site uploads the requests and claims for me, making it easier to organize. Also allows for automatic uploading by the participants with their fics. Can set up coding in the site to track dropouts and bannings for the various rounds. Can also set up coding to do the purging of the requests that are no longer valid.

Cons: people bitch about the lack of comments now and I'm not sure that commenting would go up at the website. I mean, if people can't hit the comment button at the bottom of a post, I doubt they'd be willing to click a link on a website.

What do you guys think of the feasibility of it? Take it off LJ and have it more automated and, imho, more polished? Honesty set to "on" plz. I can take the concrit, really :D. This is, obviously, just something in the beginning stages so the more input, the better. I want to get it hashed out as best I can here before I take it to the main comm as you guys speak "wookese" and stuffs.

Comment away and, as soon as I get back from Fry's, I'll be responding!

One thing you could possibly do is use a platform like Joomla or something (even heavily modded wordpress) that has some built in blog-like features and multi-user capabilities as well as lj-like features like tags and stuff. I don't know a whole lot about website building (this is a moderately hilarious statement if you know that I own no less than FOUR domain names) but I've been looking into both of those things for a fannish site/archive thing for myself, and I want as much flexibility as possible in case I start having fic as well as just graphics. I know WP at least has some pretty cool extensions that allow it to integrate with LJ to some extent.
