Hurricane Katrina - animal update
Sep. 4th, 2005 03:59 pmAs some of you know, I work for a Humane Society. Sure, I do payroll and accounting but it's still a humane society that still does great work.
As I've been tearing myself apart because of the fact that I am stuck not being able to do much to help out the victims of Katrina apart from just sending money, my queries were answered.
Companion animals (ie dogs, cats, ferrets, etc) that were abandoned, lost, left behind, seperated from family, etc, are being transported to humane societies across the country. The one that I work for is expecting over 100 dogs in the next 24 hours with more to be delivered after that. I'm excited to say that I am part of the work crew helping process these animals through temperment testing, logging the animals in, etc.
I'm so psyched that I'm about to pee my pants (ok, not quite that psyched). I didn't really want to labor on Labor Day but it's going to be nice to do some good work for the victims.
This is why microchipping your animals is so very very important. With a microchip, these animals can be returned to their owners. A fellow employee lost her cat and it was found 2 months later...the microchip reunited them. Heck, there was a story in the newspaper down here about a dog reunited with his owner 7 years after being lost because of a microchip. These chips are very reasonably priced... so if you have animals, I highly recommend that you chip all of them. I have chips in my dogs and my ferrets.
Good for you and the Humane Society!
Date: 2005-09-05 05:41 am (UTC)I am so envious that you are able to help beyond the financial donation. I've been reading all the offers for taking animals in on line. Wish I lived somewhere I could do that. Not to MENTION the people...
btw, really glad to hear you're thinking of a third part for your taxi story. Even if it is down the road.

Date: 2005-09-06 08:32 pm (UTC)I now have a shi tzu living with me in addition to my three dogs. She's really timid and it would be cruel to put her in a kennel. She's a very nice little girl and I'm hoping that my three continue to like her.
I've volunteered to go to Houston and help out there as a huge amount of animals has flooded into Houston.
I've started scribbling a different H/D story in addition to the part three of taxi. Plus, I've got a million ideas for "prequels". Let's just hope I don't mess up the prequels a la George Lucas...
