Summary: Harry celebrates Christmas by decorating his first tree.
A/N: As always, concrit is welcomed with open arms.
Christmas was always a special time for Harry, as it had been since his first Christmas when he was eleven. Before the age of eleven, Harry had stared at the Dursley’s tree through the ventilation grate, his eyes filled with wonder and longing. The first time he was allowed to touch a tree, Hagrid had picked him up and allowed him to place the first ornament on a giant fir tree of some indiscernible type.
Whenever anyone asked him what his favorite memory of Christmas was, that was the one he always told. His invisibility cloak, the first Weasley sweater, the chocolate frogs, broom kits and other various and sundry gifts had special places in his heart but that moment when he placed an ornament for the first time would always stick with him.
This Christmas, however, gave that favorite memory a run for its money. Staring at his first tree of his very own, ornaments arrayed on the table in front of him, Harry was entranced and, if he were truthful, a bit nervous. It was a momentous occasion as he contemplated which ornament should be placed first. Should it be the one that Hermione had given him, a pretty red fairy that was charmed to flutter her wings? Should it be the one that Ron gave him, a tiny golden snitch that fluttered as well? Not to mention that there was also the one that Mrs. Weasley had knitted for him, a tiny Weasley sweater with an “H” on it. Neville had given him an ornament made up of a miniature bouquet of various plants that were supposed to bring luck and joy to his house.
However, as he contemplated all of these ornaments, the one that stood out, shining and gleaming in the twinkle of fairy lights, was the small silver snake with emerald eyes. It twisted and gyrated as it lay on the table, shifting as if it were uncomfortable on the flat surface. Occasionally, its forked tongue would slip out and, with a quick hiss, taste the air before curling back in on itself.
Hands shaking, Harry lifted the snake ornament. The flick of its tongue drifted across his palm, making Harry gasp and then laugh. Still smiling, he eyed his tree until he found the perfect spot for the beautiful ornament. Its silk hanging ribbon held it secure in the folds of branches. Harry watched as its tongue flicked back and forth as it tasted the pine in the air. The ornament seemed to wink in approval before curling around itself.
Stepping back, Harry wasn’t ashamed of the tears that pooled as he contemplated his first ornament on his first tree in his first home. With a happy heart, Harry blindly grabbed the rest of the ornaments and quickly hung them. Finally finished, he sat on his sofa and stared, tears streaming down his face.
The ring at the door broke the mood and Harry quickly swiped at his eyes, trying to remove the trace of tears. Rushing to the door, Harry thanked his lucky stars that he didn’t trip. When he opened the door, his smile returned and his heart stuttered before racing through his chest. His guest, the person he was quickly falling in love with, had arrived. Before he could think rationally about it, Harry lunged forward and caught his guest in a hug. Arms reached around Harry to reciprocate as he burrowed into the neck in front of him. The smell of lemon, vanilla and home flowed through his nostrils, calming his heart.
“Merry Christmas, Draco.”

Date: 2005-12-26 10:02 pm (UTC)I have a tiny little angel in an acorn that goes on the tree first. It's actually the baby ornament my mum bought for the baby boy after me that died shortly after birth. We call it Peanut.

Date: 2005-12-27 03:19 pm (UTC)I'm sorry you don't get a tree *wails*. I had 8 trees set up this year. One of them is from when my mom was small... so it's about 60 years old (obviously artificial). My main tree this year was a big hit. It's an artificial and spinning tree at 10 feet tall.
I can take pictures and send them to you if it's any consolation at all?

Date: 2005-12-28 05:49 pm (UTC)If you're not going to be able to participate, you can ask another author (preferably not already doing a day) to take over for you for that time frame. That way, we can get a bit a variety, since it doesn't seem likely that everyone will be able to participate every week for the year.
Here (http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=hd_365) is the userdata of it :D
