Fic Update - Trust
Oct. 27th, 2005 06:22 pmI'm posting new fic. This is set in my WiP realm of Voice in the Dark. It is more of an interlude but it does not fit into the current time setting.
However, after seeing this beautiful work of art by
kidenart, I just had to write a story based on it. What's wonderful is that it fits in perfectly with the AWDT Fic Challenge prompt this week. My chosen prompt this week was "Love vanquishes time. To lovers, a moment can be eternity, eternity can be the tick of a clock. "
So, without further ado, here are the details:
Title: Trust (set in the world of Voice in the Dark)
Author:
wook77
Rating: G
Pairing: H/D
Word Count: 912
Summary: Draco gives Harry what he's dreamed of but refuses to acknowledge.
Warnings: Slightly fluffy, slightly angsty
“Come on, Harry.” Draco tugged at Harry’s hands as he attempted to drag him outside.
“No, Draco, I said leave it!” Harry leaned back and resisted the tug. He cursed the day that he ever mentioned how much he missed flying to Draco. It was a stupid moment of weakness on his part. Without a shadow of a doubt, Harry knew that he was not meant to get on a broom ever again. Blindness did not mean that he was dumb.
“Where’s your Gryffindor courage, eh, Scarface?” Harry really wished that he could wipe that smirk out of Draco’s voice and off of his face.
“I have plenty of courage, Ferret! I just don’t WANT to fly.” By lying to the world and himself, Harry figured he’d eventually accept the fact that he wasn’t able to fly any longer. There would be no more loops, no more dives, no more Wronski Feints, no more Quidditch, no more competition, no more freedom. Who was he kidding?, he asked himself. He wanted to fly more than he wanted his next breath.
“Bollocks! You just said the other day you did.” Once more, Draco tugged Harry. This time, Harry’s overwhelming need for flight allowed Draco to continue pulling him outside.
“Draco, I can’t fly. I’m blind. I can’t see where I’m going, I can’t steer, I’ll crash into something. Draco, why aren’t you listening to me?!” Harry’s voice continued to rise higher and higher.
“I’m listening to you, alright. I’m listening to your heart, you prat. You want to fly. Let me do that for you.” From gruff to soft, Draco reassured Harry. After a bit more of a tussle, Harry gave in to his heart and Draco.
“Fine, but if I die, I’m coming back and haunting you.” Draco gave a quick bark of laughter. Harry’s nervousness didn’t decrease however, especially when he felt the wood underneath his hand. The tremor in his hand embarrassed him. Flying had never been one of his fears. It was shaming to realize that it was now.
His worry dissipated a bit when he felt the comforting weight of Draco’s hand on his.
“Harry, you know how to mount a broom. Just trust me, ok?” Harry’s gaze shifted from where he felt his hand resting on the broom to where he thought Draco’s face was. Back and forth his gaze went, the decision was hard. His fear almost overrode his trust in Draco.
The fact that he trusted Draco also scared him. This was the same prat that had tormented him for six years. This was the same prat that had tried to kill Dumbledore, had let in the Death Eaters, had protected his family, had killed his father, had saved Harry. Harry was afraid that Draco could see the thoughts flashing across his face as he contemplated this decision. The tightening grip over his hand told Harry that he was still an open book.
That tiny gesture cemented his decision. With an assurance he didn’t quite feel, he swung his leg over the broom.
“Well? Are we flying or not?” Harry could hear the expulsion of breath right before Draco mounted the broom in front of him. Draco pulled Harry’s arms around him.
“Hang on tight. I would hate for you to haunt me.” A nervous laugh came out of Harry’s mouth.
The ground disappeared from beneath Harry’s feet. Suddenly, they were airborne. The air rushed past Harry as he pressed against Draco. Soft fabric was crushed in his grip as he held on tightly.
“Alright, then, Harry?” Draco’s voice was pitched slightly higher than the sound of the wind.
“Can we go a bit faster?” The speed of the air and the sound of the wind answered Harry.
Soon, the two boys were flitting across the sky, diving and soaring in random patterns. Harry’s grin split his face as that missed freedom, the craving for speed and release burst away from his chest and fled into the wind. Soon, he was laughing and cheering as they soared higher and faster. The dipping and weaving of the broom just heightened his sense of freedom.
Eventually, though, the broom slowed until they were barely moving. A sigh passed Harry’s lips as he leaned against Draco’s back. The scent of sweat and wood polish combined with the subtle fragrance that Harry always associated with Draco. He closed his eyes and pressed his cheek flush against the neck in front of him. They were so close that Harry imagined that nothing could get between them.
“Thank you, Draco.” A hand covered his grip. His words were quiet and he wasn’t sure if they could be heard. As close as he was to Draco, he hoped he wouldn’t have to speak louder. Normal tones would ruin the moment.
“Anytime, Harry.” Draco seemed to understand as he answered back in the same volume.
They stayed like that for an eternity, for a tick of the clock. Which one, Harry neither knew nor cared. At this moment, he wasn’t conflicted about trusting his former rival. During this eternal moment, he knew how he felt and wanted it to continue. The conflict would reappear, they wouldn’t be themselves if it didn’t, but for now, Harry let the press of bodies and rush of feelings engulf him as they hovered on a broomstick. In his mind’s eye, they were above the Quidditch Pitch at Hogwarts, holding something even more important than the Golden Snitch in their communal grasp.
As always, concrit welcomed with open arms.
Finally, please please please pop over to
kidenart and express your love of that art.

Date: 2005-10-28 02:02 am (UTC)where in your timeline do you see this? i was wondering if that's after where your current chapter leaves off or before.
i love that harry is afraid of his trust in draco [or maybe getting closer to draco in general] and that draco can take that worry away by taking harry flying.
on a broomstick. In his mind’s eye, they were above the Quidditch Pitch at Hogwarts, holding something even more important than the Golden Snitch in their communal grasp.
that's a beautiful image.

Date: 2005-10-28 07:49 am (UTC)I'm glad you're reading it exactly as I was trying to imply. Harry is much more afraid of his trust than of the flying. His whinging is more of a smoke screen. Draco is becoming Harry's lifeline in more ways than one.

Date: 2005-10-28 05:24 am (UTC)(And I have to tell you... apparently my mind is in the gutter [right where it belongs, I might add] tonight, because this: he felt the wood underneath his hand made me go "Eee! He's touching his wood!" and then "Oh... it's a broom, not... something else... *ahem*".)
Also, dude, that icon is awesome for this universe. Perfect! *admires*

Date: 2005-10-28 08:02 am (UTC)You made me giggle. Rereading that really does allow for it. They are holding something more than the snitch, you know ;)
I really wanted something soft because the boys are in a weird spot that was awkward to get them out of. I was a little shocked when Draco said what he did at the end of four. I seriously went, huh? he wasn't supposed to say that! Then I liked it so I left it.

Date: 2005-10-28 05:11 pm (UTC)It's brilliant, and I've finally gone back and finally read the previous chapters - and now I'm practically drooling all over my desk waiting for more. XD
AND THIS:
In his mind’s eye, they were above the Quidditch Pitch at Hogwarts, holding something even more important than the Golden Snitch in their communal grasp.

Date: 2005-10-28 06:36 pm (UTC)Chapter 5 needs a bit re-written due to the fact that I jumped the gun a bit with this interlude.
Your image, your art, inspired that death ;)

Date: 2005-10-28 10:11 pm (UTC)I went into your journal to see if you posted anything about your birthday party or about futures updates of your ff and surprise! you posted several stories… uhmmmm, mad at me? :ó(
About Trust, well, I can imagine Harry thinking "Thanks Draco, for the flight, for this intimate moment, for making me feel secure and for giving me something back when I am here so sick of my limitations…” This is becoming a wonderful, vivid, touching and lovely story…
Hugs,
R.

I love Harry's insecurity and fear (and how sensitive you portrayed various details, like how difficult the most simple and everyday things are for Harry now), and how Draco tries to encourage him but is so scared and in denial himself.

Date: 2005-11-02 09:16 pm (UTC)I had to rewrite part of ch.5. However, I got stuck on the re-write so I did my "prompt me baby" post. I'm going to write a few of them, get my brain functioning creatively again and I'll be right back to it.
I'm glad you're liking the potrayal. I'm always afraid I'm putting too much detail in or not enough.
