Colin remembered when he found out that he was Magical, not just magical in a pulling-rabbits-out-of-a-hat way, but that he really truly had Magic flowing in his veins. He wasn't like those fake magicians he'd seen once when his family had gone to London. He was a Wizard and he would be going to school to learn how to use his Magic.

That first trip to Diagon Alley overwhelmed him. There were women in crazy hats and men wearing very large robes, owls screeching and children running from window to window. Finally, Colin gave in to the impulse and ran to the nearest window, staring in wonder at the Magic ice cream. As he wondered what Magic ice cream tasted like, he heard a group of children with striped ties that matched their ice creams talking about a boy named Harry Potter. The stories were intriguing and as his parents went to buy his books, he trailed far behind in a vain attempt to hear more details.

The stories didn't compare to meeting Harry in person, though. After wishing and wanting so hard for Gryffindor because that was the House that Harry was in, Colin did his best to show his appreciation for Harry. Being attacked by a basilisk was worth it because it brought him closer to Harry than any amount of photographs or offers to help with "anything, Harry, really, I mean it, anything" ever could.

There were times that Colin regretted wishing for something so hard. "Be careful what you wish for..." had never been more true than at this moment as Colin wrangled with Harry's shirt and tie, avoiding the smacking hands and the angry words. After countless slaps and threats, Harry was poured into the bed and Colin curled up next to him.

"Why do you make me hurt you? I love you, I don't want to hurt you. Why do you make me hurt you?"

There wasn't anything Colin could say to that and, instead, he left the words decay in the air.

Colin remembered the first time Harry had paid attention to him. Not just about him or around him or even because he was the only one there, but actually to him. They'd crossed paths after the War when The Daily Prophet had wanted photographs for a large article on Harry's life and heroism. After the shoot, they'd gone for drinks and talked. There was a connection there that, when Harry walked Colin home, had grown until Harry kissed Colin.

The memory of that hesitant press of lips had Colin's fingers pressing against his lips in the crowded room, attending yet one more function that Harry had been invited to because of his position. They liked to trot out the Hero and, if Colin were honest with himself, Harry liked to act the part for the masses. Even now, with Colin under his arm, Harry talked and flirted with the group. Moments like these kept Colin going, moments when Harry showed his appreciation of Colin and sang his praises to the world.

These bright, shining moments reminded Colin why he put up with the slurred insults in the cab back to their flat in the Muggle part of London. They reminded Colin why he stayed even when Harry was gripping his hair too tightly and pressing his face into the wall because a glass was out of place in the kitchen.

Colin remembered the first spell he ever learned to cast. He remembered the swish and flick, concentrating so hard on the words Wingardium Leviosa and the gesture, that his feather fluttered before anyone else's. He remembered the praise from Professor Flitwick and babbling about it to Harry in the Gryffindor common room later that night.

The smile Harry had given him in response to that moment was nothing like the feral grin on his face now. This feral grin had Colin shaking slightly, not sure which way was the proper way to go, which word might set him off, which action was correct and right and would keep him from being punished. This grin promised that no matter what Colin chose, it would be wrong and Harry would insure that Colin learned his lesson.

Harry's motion was so quick that Colin didn't even see him moving before pain erupted across his cheek where Harry's hand swept across. Blood spurted in his mouth when he bit his tongue. Another blow, and this time he cried out as he saw it approach. It didn't help as he went flying backwards, landing on the glass-topped dining table and shattering it.

Colin wondered if there was a spell that would fix this and transform Harry back into the man he'd been before the War. The thought had him smiling sadly as he swished and flicked the broken glass into the rubbish bin and wondered what they would do for a dining room table with company coming over shortly.

Colin wondered if there was a spell that would make him stop loving this Harry so much.

Colin remembered the first time he realised that he loved Harry. The day was blustery and slightly chilly. Colin had forgotten his coat but Harry gallantly offered his own. By the end of the date, they were both huddled underneath it on a park bench as they discussed what they wanted from their future. Harry wanted to be left alone by the masses and Colin wanted to be loved.

In the end, neither truly got what they wanted. They learned to adapt, to change. Harry found that the free alcohol at the events helped him cope with the neverending stream of forced appearances that he just couldn't say no to. Colin found that Harry might not be capable of traditional affection but when it came down to it, Harry loved him in his own way.

It wasn't Harry's fault that the fame, the attention, the adulation, the gifts, the others all did their part to twist and turn the core of Harry into the mockery that was currently grabbing his second bottle of alcohol for the evening.

"Sure you want that, Harry?" Colin couldn't stop the question even though he knew the results and, consequently, braced for the eruption.

"I'll do whatever I goddamn well please. If you don't like it, you're more than able to leave." Harry gestured with the now open bottle, "Door."

Colin found that he couldn't leave. Harry would change back one day.

As always, I'd love to know what you think. Concrit welcomed with open arms.
