Resolution Reviews, same disclaimers as every other time. Spoilers abound:
Danse Macabre by Laurell K. Hamilton Did Not Finish
This was, without a doubt, the most painful book I have ever attempted to read. I've finally decided what's been bugging me about LKH's books recently. Her books are written with a wordcount in mind. She replays the same conversation four times (and mostly, with the same verbage) and the books never go anywhere.
Within the first six chapters, she described Anita's entourage/harem as Anita's "sweeties" twenty six times. TWENTY SIX TIMES...TWENTY SIX TIMES . I admit that these are her characters but "sweetie" is so NOOOOOT an Anita sort of word.
Then, there's the description of the anger and the anger's effect on the eyes. OMG, HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU DESCRIBE SOMEONE'S EYES AS COLD/COOLING/ICY before it gets repetitive? In less than 200 words, she did it THREE TIMES for the SAME PERSON.
I'm also completely and totally sick of everything unique happening to Anita. Seriously, she's the only one to have this, she's the only one to do this, ZOMG SHE'S A UNIQUE AND SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE, I get it already, stop pointing this shit out to me!!!!!!!
This book reads worse than the WORST FANFICTION STORY EVAH (and I know a few of you from the crack!lunch of doom know what one I'm talking about). We even have the possibility of pregnancy and ZOMG how unique for Anita to have to go through this and not know who the father is! WOW, that sure as shit hasn't happened to a bazillion other girls throughout the history of time.
Oh, Laurell (may I call you Laurell?), you've now killed my love of Anita with this book. It was so painful that I actually did a dance of glee when I returned it to the library. This piece of dreck would've been better off being used as bedding in the hamster cages at work than to be ever read by anyone.
Goodbye, Anita Blake. You were entertaining for awhile but now? Now I have to go find something to clean my palate and re-inspire me to write my own works. It's just depressing as fuck that this sort of shit gets published when I've read so many manuscripts that are sooooo much better.
As much as it pains me to rate it this highly, I have to go with the established scale -
negative 8 1 out of 10
Innocent In Death by JD Robb (Nora Roberts)
Oh what a breath of fresh air after fighting my way through thirteen chapters of the above dreck.
Dear Nora (may I call you Nora?),
Bless you for illustrating what a successful author of a very large series of books should do. Your writing is clear, concise and beautiful. Your characters stay in character and you do a brilliant job on coming up with new cases and ways to play around in your world.
I have no idea how you write as much as you do but I want to be you when I grow up. I fangirl you fiercely and cannot wait until the next book coming out at the end of this month (FEBRUARY 20th ZOMG). Please to be continuing with the writing for forever and ever and ever.
Much love,
wook
This book sends Eve after the murderer of a history teacher and, like all the other books, the twists and turns are fairly unpredictable. In addition, Mavis gives birth and Eve and Roarke are hi-freaking-larious while being so supportive. Eve's bargaining with Roarke makes me giggle every time. Anyone know where I can get me a Roarke of my own? Seriously, he's lovely. Eve gets slapped in the face with a situation similar (but not) to her own childhood and it's amazing the way she's able to separate herself from Eve to Lt. Dallas. Sometimes, she breaks and sometimes she succeeds and I love that it's realistic. She's not always a perfectmary sue anita blake character and that makes her all the more special to me.
I've noticed in most of my reviews of things I don't like that I sum it up with "I was bored" or "it was boring" or "I called it before it happened". I've been able to predict some of the JD Robb books and this one is one of them. However, the WAY that Eve gets to the same conclusion is extremely interesting and entertaining. I wasn't bored while waiting to see if I arrived at the right conclusion.
This entire series is, for the most part, brilliant. There's only been one book I haven't enjoyed and I don't remember what one it is, I'll have to go back and re-read them.

Date: 2007-02-05 10:54 pm (UTC)It's seriously soooooo painful to read it. I got to chapter 13 and couldn't do it anymore. I was slamming it shut with a glare every three to four paragraphs just to take a breath away from it before trying again.
*sighs* It used to be one of my favorite series too.
