A Rec (my giftfic at Springsmut)
Mar. 17th, 2009 10:07 amIt's taken me awhile to put my thoughts down but I've finally sort of got it.
A Walk in the World by a mystery author at
hp_springsmut. GAH.
I left a Very Long Comment but I thought I'd adapt it here and rec the fic for you. This fic is Dean/Seamus and is, hands down, the best Dean/Seamus I've read. It's because it gets to me, personally. There are little details that the author couldn't have known about my first ex-fiance and I but she got them, regardless. Those little personal details just nailed how much I love this story.
It's a slow, gentle slide into love, one that takes 18k for the journey. Make time because this story is totally worth it. It's got Dean/Seamus and Seamus/Lavender. It's got travelling. It's got tattoos. It's got kissing. But, more, it's got all these little details that hit for me.
Steve, my first ex-fiance (as opposed to the second ex-fiance named... Stephan), and I would go to Mexico on these random trips. We'd drink Dos Equis in little bars while munching on chips and salsa. We'd go to the beach and I'd be far too stubborn to put on lotion so I'd end up sunburnt. We'd curl up and sleep on the patio of our room instead of inside on the bed because the night was too lovely to be inside. We'd bemoan the heat but we'd love it, too. We'd climb over ruins and we'd go on these journeys into nowhere just for the hell of it. We spent a month in Chiapas volunteering during the height of the Zapatista movement. There's no way that the author could've known about the travels through Mexico and the fond memories but she brought them back and inserted them in there.
There's a scene in the fic that just hits for me, as well. A soft, gentle moment that, even if the rest of the fic had sucked (which it totally didn't), would've redeemed the entire thing.
Even if you don't read Dean/Seamus - read this. It's a beautiful love story that's well-written and amazing. It's almost completely original fic (very little of the Wizard world after the beginning) and well worth the time. It's mainly the story of two best mates falling in love. Absolutely, brilliantly done.
