I agree with some of the things you said. I think the biggest thing with me was how they played down the relationship of Comedian and Silk Spectre (the first). I think they missed out on the whole there was actually love there bit. And of course the big with the lack of the giant squid was more than irksome. I mean, I don't mind straying from the canon, but I do mind changing it completely. But, well..
Heh. Dr.Manhattan's penis. xD When I read the book I actually missed it and filed a complaint to a fellow geek that even though Dr.Manhattan is naked during a big part of the book, we can't see his penis. Turns out, we can and I missed it. There weren't a lot of frames when there was full frontal. I was wondering how they were going to handle it, and I actually rather appreciate the fact that they left it in. Though it was very distracting, he was naked. I don't really see a way for them to go around having him walk around naked (which was a pretty hefty plot-point about how he was) and not show his thing.
I'm glad they made Comedian and Rorschach as well as they did. They did miss a lot of the things that made me like the Comedian in the book in the first place (he was my favorite character), but they were still brilliantly done. I love them both. ♥
I kind of agree about Veidt, except... Well, there was little to expand, really. I mean, very unfortunately, Veidt wasn't developed in the books at all. There is little said about him that I can imagine putting to the screen.
I also didn't mind the stuff on Mars, though I do agree that a little less mush could've sufficed. However, it was pretty close to the way it was supposed to be, and as sad as it is, she was his last connection to any humanity. I'm not a big sucker for fluff, myself.
Hee. Sorry for the rant. I should post a review of my own. I'm afraid my liking of the movie ties too closely to the book, since I just re-read it. It's unfortunate because I make the best efforts to view them as two separate entities, but it's tough. The things they left out really pain me, and the things they kept in I can let slide because they let them in. I'm not clear, myself, how I feel about the movie yet. I need to re-watch it to form an opinion of whether I like it or not.
