Resolution Reviews
Every year, I resolve to watch 50 new-to-me movies and read 50 new-to-me books. My reviews have really slumped off as time has gotten short but here are a few good ones for you to check out. Book links go to All Romance eBooks but I do not get a commission from there if you click through. Instead, I just like their rebate program (buy 10, get one free).
Earth and Sky by Zahra Owens This book is based, in part, on the gay-for-you trope which annoys me but then it fleshes out that it's more "i'm finally willing to admit I'm gay, because of you". There's plenty going on in this book - there's a horse thief plot, a crazy ass straight from the soaps love plot and more. If someone had told me about the love plot beforehand, I would've never bought the book. But it works and it's rather awesome. I liked this book, found the pacing to be excellent, the characters to be likeable and flawed, the resolution to be believable and, for the most part, I heartily recommend it. There were issues but they weren't bad enough that I wouldn't recommend this book. 10 out of 10
A Film Unfinished is a documentary about an unfinished Nazi Propaganda film about the Warsaw ghettos. It's painful and sad and awful but interesting and eye-opening. It's a good look into what was happening with many facets. There's the German filmmakers that were ordered to make the film, the Nazi recounts of the situation in the ghettos, the Jewish written accounts, interviews with Jews that lived in the ghettos and a brief look into the archivists on both the German and Jewish sides. 10 out of 10
Between Sinners and Saints by Marie Sexton I sort of felt like Marie Sexton was banging me over the head with how awesomely awesome Mormons are and how they're just TOTES misunderstood but I liked the main characters enough that I just ignored the Mormon bullshit. I didn't find the Mormon tripe to be very believable but that's because I live in the heart of Mormon country and I sure as shit don't run into very accepting Mormons down here. However, I'm glad that the main characters were able to have a good relationship. Levi (known as Leviticus to his family) is a former Mormon who isn't understood by his family. Jaime was abused as a child and completely unable to trust. Somehow, the two come together and find a bond. The relationship is awesome. 10 out of 10
Breaking Logan's Law by Cameron Dane Quinn Security is an interesting verse. I like it. This one was sort of awesome. I liked Nate and Logan a lot. They're sort of hilarious in the way that they come together and interact. It's a fun romp with an actual plot that has some interesting twists. I felt horrible for the brother in this book (part of the actual plot). 10 out of 10
GhosTV Psycop 6 Victor and Jacob are a lot fun. I like all of these books. Victor is just so fucked up but likeable in that fucked-upness. Jacob is sweet and beautiful and supportive. They're fun books, not super thinky or anything but they're just enjoyable.10 out of 10
The Sensei is a fantastic movie about a gay kid and his bullying and how he overcomes it. It's got a lot of deep stuff in it. Not only does it go into gay bullying but it also delves into the AIDS epidemic, family dynamics, small towns and religion. It's a great movie. I loved it. 10 out of 10
Sons of Anarchy Considering I watched 3 full seasons, I'm counting this as 10 movies cause holy shitballs, that was a lot of time devoted to this tv series. But oh man, it WAS AWESOME. I really loved these guys a lot. Juice is my absolute favorite. I love the dynamics and the unbelievableness of this and the craziness of the plot. Just so much fun. Plus, who doesn't want Charlie Hunnam naked? Yeah, I thought so. 10 out of 10
