Halloween

I'm going to need a beta for a fic by the end of the week. Who's available? Star Trek, Kirk/McCoy. I'm still writing it but it'll prolly be in the 5-10k range.

Still sick. My insurance kicks back in today so I'm going to try to go to the doctor's tomorrow.

I'm sort of doing NaNoWriMo. Was thinking of doing NaBloPoMo. IDK what I'd talk about but I figure I have enough fic backlog to post that I might be able to do it. We'll see. The NaNoWriMo project is the bakery AU that I'm cowriting with [livejournal.com profile] elanorofcastile which is, right now, titled "I Knead You (A Bakery AU)". Cause, lol. I'm also working on a WWI AU based off a drabble I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] bridge2sickbay.

I feel tainted but I'm sort of in love with the New Moon Soundtrack. GOD, that Editors song. Srsly. People. It's fucking amazing. (who was it at Azkatraz that said that when they hear the Editors, they think of me?)

We hired a new person at work to take the dumbass' position. The new person is AWESOME, so far. She's already further, a week in, than Dumbass was after over a month. I'm thinking I'll regain a bit of breathing room at work again.

I'm stalking [livejournal.com profile] yuletide sign-ups. I keep refreshing my flist to see if sign-ups have opened yet. I really want to write Green Street Hooligans or Four Brothers. Or The Departed. Or Boondock Saints (which, don't get me started on the rant about how BDS2 isn't playing in the fucking state of Arizona).

We had fewer trick-or-treaters this year than we did last year and we have like 50 new houses around. I'm sort of disappointed. We only had about 150 when we had 170 last year and were expecting about 250 this year. But there were a bunch of kids that were dressed up as Jango Fett, Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader. Only one of the kids recognized my Princess Leia hair. One of the Anakin's was shocked that i knew who he was and when I touched my Leia hair and went "well, duh, Leia hair here" he goes "o.O Who's Leia?". Which, yanno, fail. I just lolled. His dad looked embarrassed. I'm hoping someone is going to learn how awesome the Original Trilogy is. We also had a Storm Shadow who was shocked that I knew who he was. We geeked out over GI Joe for about 10 minutes until his mum goes "come on, there's more candy to be had!" and he goes "so? She knows GI Joe, mom, I'm going to marry her" which, lol. He was maybe 6. I had to give my future husband extra candy. It was a moral obligation.

There was also a Gambit, a Wolverine, a Cyclops, a Jean Grey and a Sabretooth (complete with bushy blond hair) trick-or-treating together.

I think Halloween rewards the nerds :D.

We had the coolest homemade robot out of cardboard boxes. Hands down, that was my favorite costume. The little girl looked so happy to be in the costume and went on and on about how her mum made it for her and she was supposed to be a pink version of the robot from Lost in Space (which, I didn't get :( so maybe I'm not as nerdy as I thought) and her basket matched! It was a cardboard box with a homemade handle! All of it was spraypainted pink. So AWESOME.

I wish more kids had homemade costumes, not that I minded the Star Wars costumes or anything. But homemade costumes remind me of when I was a little kid and my mum dressed me up as my own birthday party and my sister as a bundle of grapes. Or homemade dog costumes with mum-painted faces and spots while she pinned a tail on my leotard and made me wear thick tights and ballet shoes. We'd get homemade fudge and popcorn balls from the neighbors. Storebought candy was a rare treat. Then again, we lived way out in the middle of the country and would have to be driven from house to house because it was sometimes a mile or two between houses with half-mile long driveways. I wish the whole "retro" movement would go towards homemade costumes, too, instead of just raping my childhood to make another buck.

I went as Ensign Pricess Leia Uhura, communications officer on the USS Farragut. I had zombie make-up on and was, obviously, dead. I had a rocking lightsabre, phaser and Han Solo's blaster. I also got to rock my knee-high boots. So much fun! Alas, there were no little Kirks, McCoys or Spocks in my neighborhood. If I ever feel better about the photos, I'll post 'em. As it is, omg, wideload :(.

Hi wook, I miss you!

Hi you! I miss you too! <3

Wee!brother was big into GI Joe as a kid (the cartoon!), and he had a cat named Stormshadow. I can't hear that name and NOT picture her. *laughs*

[identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! This little one was very cute and awesome and I'm not just saying that cause he's my future husband :P

Your wee!brother obviously has good taste in cartoons :D

I believe I owe you a beta! ♥

EEE! I'm so taking you up on that! I have so much to write yet, though :(

You'll lol at the plot premise, though :D

I love your wee little husband. He's got his priorities in line. Once you find a good nerd girl, you better keep her!

Hehe Halloween pretty much *IS* the Holiday for nerds:

Encouraged to dress up and roleplay--check!
Encouraged to be both clever and kind to be rewarded with candy and other treats--check!
Optional arts and crafts activities, including those that rely heavily on the use of a knife--check!
Actively indulging your fantasies and mandatory willing suspension of disbelief--check!

:D

I was a cloud one year. Seriously. I have pictures. My mom dressed me neck to toe in white longjohns and then wrapped and stuffed and glued cotton batting to me. In complete defiance of cloud-hood, we made cardboard stars, wrapped them in tinfoil and then liberally doused them in glitter and stuck them my cloud. LOL.

I have pictures....Maybe I'll dig one out. :D My best friend was a popple. I'm not going to lie, she had one of those vinyl jumpsuits and a plastic mask. I had fucking cotton batting, tinfoil and glitter. I bet you can tell who won. ;)

HOMG YOUR CLOUD SOUNDS AWESOME! I have a picture of me as my own birthday party somewhere in a falling apart girl scouts memory book somewhere.

I totally think that stars go along with clouds. After all, nothing beats when the clouds break and you can see all the stars. I live really far out of town and you can see thousands.

You totally win.

I love your checklist. Totally and completely true!

I'm so excited at the idea of both a WWII and bakery AU! WANT!

I'm doing NaNo. Got just over 1000 words done yesterday, which wasn't a bad start considering I have flu/cold from hell that doesn't seem to want to back off any time soon. Sorry you're sick too. It's rotten, isn't it?

I'm stalking [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, too. I don't usually do well at fic challenges but I want to do Yuletide this year because I think I can handle it and it has always looked like so much fun.

[identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! Thanks! I'm really enjoying writing them and [livejournal.com profile] elanorofcastile was teasing me with dribs and drabs of her part today. SO AWESOME

Nice! Every bit counts, after all! I'm at about 4k for the two days which is less than I'd wanted but more than I had before so I'm satisfied.

You need to get over being sick and I do too. We have fic to write, dammit.

I love [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. I've had great luck every year I've participated. I got the best Departed story last year from someone who had never written Departed before. So much fun!

In 15 years that boy can be your arm candy. Try not to think about how he's only 6 now. That makes it creepy. >.>

DANGER WOOK ROBINSON. YOUR NERD CARD WILL BE REVOKED... Actually no, that robot wasn't very boxy. I would have missed it too, especially since she was pink.

I agree about the costumes. I think I threw up a little every time a girl from High School Musical rang my door. Sign of the HP fandom depleting? Only one HP related character and he was about 5. D:

Knee-high boots are required for all my halloween costumes. If it hadn't been raining, hot and humid I totally would have found a reason to put them on.

[identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
LOLOLOLOL THAT IS SO GROSS OMG

She was like shockingly pink, too. Thinks Susan G Komen Race For The Cure pink all over.

Oh thank god I had NONE of those High School Musical peeps. I had no HP though. And no Hannah Montana so I guess I should be blessed. Plenty of firemen and policemen and star wars, though.

I love my knee-high boots. I totally feel sexy in them until I see photos of myself. It was warm here, too, but I just couldn't resist.

Halloween totally rewards the nerds. It's so awesome. :D Glad the new person is working out! Hopefully things will get less crazy for you.

*hugs*

[identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
They are so working out that I actually had 10 minutes of downtime at work today in which to relax. AND I took a two hour lunch :D.

*hugsbackomg*

We totally need to have another Star Trek viewing party like yesterday.

[identity profile] star98hope.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY for two-hour lunches. So awesome.

And omg I am counting the days until Star Trek is released on DVD. I forsee multiple viewings that first week, haha. Even though I won't have anyone to squee at the Kirk/McCoy goodness with me. :(

[identity profile] starlitshore.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
I miss trick or treating. I mean, it's one thing to dress up and go out dancing/drinking with friends. But I miss walking around and having people give me free chocolate!

[identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Meeeeee tooo!!!! I sort of want to borrow my nephews next year and go trick-or-treating. But I do love handing out the candy, too. That is always fun to have the kids be all excited about the decorations and then giggle that an adult is in a costume too. Even if they don't know who Leia is.

[identity profile] starlitshore.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet you made a fantastic Leia. ;) Yeah, my mom gets a huge kick out of being the candy-hander-outer. She was all sad this year and emailed me that she hadn't had any kids by 6:30. Apparently she only got about 30 in total the whole night! We live on a court, though, so I guess some kids got lazy. Haha.
