Random poll/discussion for the day...

In PS/SS, the Sorting Hat took almost a minute to decide where to Sort Seamus. Obviously it settled on Gryffindor but what other House could it have thought of?

Feel free to leave a comment as to your reasoning. I'd love to hear your input because I'm undecided.

[Poll #838737]

I voted Hufflepuff and I'm just going to comment because they seems such a misunderstood and underappreciated house. I like them.
To me, it seems their defining characteristics are loyalty and perserverence/stubbornness (it's a badger! ;-) ) and Seamus definitely is one to stand by his opinions and he's the type who sticks with people too - despite his disagreement with Harry during the later books, he had his reasons - and stubbornly stuck with them...

[identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually think Hufflepuff is the strongest House because of their unity. They have such disparities of skills and people and, yet, they are able to get along and adapt and stuffs.

Seamus is very stubborn and I like your reasoning :).

Also - I've missed you. Did you have a good trip?

I used to think Slytherin, but realising how loyal he is to his beliefs and his mother, especially in OotP, and given how passive he can be when reconciling, although begrudgingly, with Harry when he realised that the latter wasn't full of rubbish, showed that he might not be doing things for his own selfish reasons or means.

Er, I never really pay much attention to Seamus. So I'm not really sure of my reasoning. Just what seems most reasonable to me at the moment.

*is not helpful*

[identity profile] chaeldub.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason I say Slytherin is:

a: I don't see why it would take the Sorting Hat nearly a minute to decide Gryffindor over Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, it didn't take that long for Harry and it said he was "particularly difficult".

b. He can be quick to judge, as in the case of his arguements with HArry in OotP.

c. He only went to one DA meeting (ok, he wasn't being friendly with the rest of them) - but if roomates were really the true friends they are they would have trusted him and included him in the first place... even dragged him along for his best interests.

d. Even though he's a half-blood he is very close to his mother (the magical parent) and listens to her. WHere as alot of Gryffindors seem to go against what they're parents suggest.

plus if he was in Slytherin he could wear green, so it would be like he was barracking for Ireland all the time *grin*

[identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that thinking. I used to think Slytherin as well but the Hufflepuff reasoning is well thought out.

I liked Slytherin because he did try to advance. He worked for goals.

*pouts*

Not pay attention to Seamus? For Shame, Icee. For Shame.

Eh, well I mean in canon... I haven't read all the books again since getting into fandom, and so I have no concept in my head of what he is like. I only have fanon Seamus in my head, who is probably nothing like canon Seamus.

And yeah he's not a favorite character of mine. I don't dislike him, I just don't really care about him. *shrugs*

[identity profile] wook77.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I do like the green argument, I must admit ;).

I don't think he's quick to judge because those arguments were based on information he'd been told for quite awhile. That he believed the people in power was a mistake.

He was fairly loyal to his friends, even with the mistrust there.

I thought Slytherin because he did attempt to advance his own interests and do what can reward him or bring him recognition.

I like your point d. He is close to his mam but when it was shown that she was in the wrong, he rebelled. He also rebelled to go back to Hogwarts, if I'm remembering correctly and my HBP is at home and I've not been there in over a week so I'll leave that up to those that can research it better.

But... but... [livejournal.com profile] lonraigh_shay - look at him, how can you not care about him? He's amazing! He cares about you!

I mean, err, yes, canon Seamus.

I like him because he's willing to butt heads with Harry, really.

Maybe the hat wasn't really deciding anything... maybe Seamus was just pelting the hat with questions? Or talking incessantly. Is that a fanon Seamus thing? See, I told you I don't know him at all.

Hat: Wow, you're totally a Gryff...
Seamus: Hey, a talking hat! That's pretty cool. Me name's Seamus, what's yours?
Hat: Er, I'm just called the Sorting Hat.
Seamus: Well, that's not right, you should have a name. Maybe I'll call you ... Humphrey.
Hat: My name isn't Humphrey.
Seamus: You have a strange accent. You're not from around here, are you?
Hat: ... I'm a hat.
Seamus: Well, yeah, that's obvious, but you have to be from somewhere. Everyone's from somewhere. Take me for example, I'm Irish. [continues for a while longer about the virtues of being Irish]
Hat: [interrupts after almost a minute] Yes, that's very nice. Now go sit at your house table, you GRYFFINDOR!
Seamus: Gryffindor. Cool. See ya around, Humphrey.

I am inclined to agree. They definitely have a lot of qualities!

Humphrey the Sorting Hat *is dead* - i'm going to always think that's his name now.

They have a nice raport, Seamus is so flirting with Humphrey, maybe I can see Seamus/Sorting Hat in the future

:)

He can be quick to judge, as in the case of his arguements with HArry in OotP.

You mean like Ernie, Zach and all the other Hufflepuffs, as well as Ron, another second choice Puff? (The only house I wouldn't call quick to judge is Ravenclaw btw.))

WHere as alot of Gryffindors seem to go against what they're parents suggest.

Yes, some Gryffindor's but not Hufflepuffs. They're very conservative and familiar.

I can't argue against the advantage of green, though.

[identity profile] chaeldub.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think that more an inter house rivalry - after all Cedric wasn't like that. But if it is so obvious he's a Hufflepuff I don't think the sorting hat would have taken so long, it only took a moment for Abbott and Bones. I think that, as with the Hat's dialogue with Harry, Slytherin and Gryffindor have similar traits they just see the world in slightly different ways. That's probably why it took so long to decide.

And as for what I said about the DA, I think if Dean is so inffluential as Seamus's friend and that Gryffindors are so close that they would have taken Seamus to these for his best interests. I mean Voldemort's coming back (according to Harry) - half of Gryffindor seems to already be in the DA - but no Slytherin and no Seamus(til the end)
