I agree with you! There are reasons for Rowling to keep her books religion-free (they are loaded with religious symbolism, but she seems to be trying hard (1) to be inclusinve and (2) not to be heavy-handed). But there is *no* reason for fanfic authors who are dealing with the intersection of the Wizarding and Muggle worlds to avoid religion entirely. I do have religious references in my latest fic, and it's gotten less notice than any of the others, which goes to prove your point, I think.
