Danny's taken to flying, every chance he gets, to Phoenix. It takes a lot of money that he doesn't have to spare but he'll do anything to see his little girl. Just because Rachel and he had divorced, just because Rachel had re-married and moved to the middle of a fucking desert, doesn't mean that he isn't going to spend time with Grace every chance he gets. With his schedule, he's flying to Phoenix on Tuesdays and Saturdays and random days, here and there. In a few months, he's got enough frequent flyer miles to get free flights to Thailand, New Zealand or even Mongolia.
So when trade rumors start near the deadline, Danny quietly tells Coach that he wouldn't mind being traded to Phoenix, just make sure they get something for him. The coach only smiles at him because, of course, Coach knows exactly why Danny wants to go to Phoenix.
Danny’s a solid player (if a loudmouthed one), one that loves the game and doesn't hesitate to preach about how awesome hockey is let alone go to the hospitals and children's wards to do community outreach. He's playing for the New Jersey Devils, the team he'd grown up aspiring to join. That sort of hometown boy routine has increased his popularity until there are plenty of people in the league that have heard of him, second line or not. Danny's an asset; he's worked hard to make himself into one, and when the trade's announced, the fans are livid.
He says his goodbyes to his hometown and tells ESPN, Versus and Darren friggin' Pang about how he's looking forward to playing with a young team like Phoenix, how he's tired of shoveling the snow wearing shorts in the winter sounds nice (though he isn't and it doesn't).
Once he's in Phoenix, the hard work begins. There's finding a rental that's close to the rink and his daughter. There's learning the vibe of a new team, fitting in with his teammates. There are family barbeques at fellow Coyotes' houses which is nice but awkward as he has to explain the divorce and custody arrangements to everyone. Grace seems to enjoy them, all the same, so he drags her to one after another. Then there's Rachel, Grace, and Stan and learning to co-exist with all of them on a more predictable basis in a new city with a vastly different and slower rhythm.
Grace makes it worth it. She's the light in his life. When he's getting up at four in the morning to head to the rink, driving in from Scottsdale to Glendale, he reminds himself of her. Her picture sits on his sun visor, something that he's getting way too much usage out here with all the sun and warmth and sun.
Did Danny mention the sun? Because there's too much of it. It's barely ever cloudy. There's no weather. No rain. No snow. No ponds. Which means no pond hockey. Which means no hanging out with his family as they send the puck shooting across the pond at one another and, sometimes, perhaps get in a few tussles.
There is, however, Circle K and their coffee. Sometimes, it's the only thing that keeps him driving into the rink in the morning. This morning is one of those mornings. After stopping at Circle K to get a coffee, he makes his way into the arena for morning skate. His duffle isn't any heavier than it normally is but it still feels like it weighs more today than any other day.
"Coach is mixing up lines today," Meka warns him as he settles in front of his locker and starts pulling on his pads and skates.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah." Meka's grimacing, something that warns Danny that whatever is about to come out of his mouth is going to ruin Danny's day.
"Jesus, just tell me already."
"They've traded for someone else at center on the main line so…"
"Who?" Danny braces himself for the bad news. They've only been teammates for a few weeks but Danny can read Meka so well that it's like they've been teammates for years so Meka's continued grimacing is troubling.
"McGarrett."
Christ. McGarrett. The Second Coming of Hockey. The face and the name and the skills and the damnable backstory that gets all the press. Danny's tired of hearing about how McGarrett gave up a promising career in hockey to join the SEALs and then, eventually, coming back to hockey. Danny's really, really tired of looking at that bastard's face on the television and in the magazines. He's even tired of hearing all about his Hockey Legend of a father, Mister Hockey himself. "Mister Hockey", what sort of nickname is that, anyway? Danny specifically doesn't think about how "Mister Hockey" was another inspiration to him when he'd been a boy.
"When's he coming in?"
"They haven't finished negotiating the trade yet from what rumor has it."
"Great. Just what I need, an ego come to save us all."
"Yeah, that's why we have you, brah," Chin says as he comes into the room, his arms full of sticks.
"Oh fuck off, Kelly. You love me and you know it." Danny says as Chin hands everyone else their sticks except for him. Chin plays a quick game of keep-away with Danny.
"Yeah, right. You and your rhapsodies of Jersey."
"That place is heaven. I'm telling you. Heaven." He draws the last word out and then sighs, fluttering his lashes and pretending a swoon. "Hell, on the other hand, is ridiculously hot and full of assholes. Sort of like this place."
"Why are you all sitting back here in the locker room? We've got practice! Move your asses!" Coach only pauses in the door to bellow before heading to the ice. After snatching his stick from a distracted Kelly, Danny follows Meka onto the slowly-becoming-familiar ice, promptly forgetting about McGarrett as he gets busy working with new linemates and running drills for hours and hours on end.
As always, I'd love to hear what you thought.
