I've traveled with Amtrak quite a few times before, and have never had any hassle about anything in my bags. There's still a 2 bag/50 lb each limit for checked baggage, but depending on if you're traveling in a sleeper or coach, carry on restrictions are a bit different. Also, they don't search your bags, beyond walking the drug dogs by them, as far as I know. Heck, I've had a pocket knife in my carry on, with a ridiculous amount of prescription meds (oh allergies, I hate you so) and cigarettes and was never bothered.

Sorry for the random influx of information, but wanted to share....


Side comment: and the super awesome thing about train travel? If you have to transfer? The next train will wait for you! (Best thing ever...especially as a woman travelling alone in parts unknown, I liked that a lot)
